HOW DO THEY GET OCTANE NUMBERS ABOVE 100?

Usually pump gas uses the ron + mon divided by 2 that gives a good rating up to around a 100 after that fuels tend to go to a super charger test that gives numbers over 100 and are associated with aircraft fuels and give numbers like 110/130 or 115/145.

Also The fuel is compared to Isooctane (2,2,4 trimethyl pentane). A fuel with equal characteristics (in the test parameters) recieves a 100 octane rating. A fuel that outperforms pure Isooctane would get better than 100.
These tests were developed in world war one because airplane engines were going into detonation and crashing and others did not with seemingly the same fuels. So these tests were to find a way to label fuels and save lives.

I wish 110 was the price and not the octane rating.

to answer the question about the lead in gasoline. they still put it in there. just not in 87-93 octane pump gas. if you go to the airport and buy 100 octane aviation fuel, it is marked low lead. or AV 100LL. The 110 and 115 racing fuel has lead in it.

The two posts that say "HOW DO YOU GET OCTANE RATINGS OVER 100?" are cut and pasted, everything else looks original.

This debate seems to come up so many times that I wouldnt doubt the ability of some members to recite these web pages line for line though.

Also FYI, if someone tells you of an octane over 125, there full of BS, as there is no way of testing fuel over 125 octane. This doesn't include diesle or jet fuel.
