My father-in-law needs your advise. When giving throttle from a stand still there is a knocking type sound coming from under the PVT cover. It is only in the first couple seconds of take off. After that, no more.

Any ideas what this could be??

Would that mean the belt is split?

When the belts wear out, they will seperate like a belt on a car. They have a cloth like material that will hang off of the belt and tap the cover making the noise you mentioned.

The other problem that you may have is a little more serious. When the buttons wear out a completely diffierent type of noise can be heard and this noise goes away under throttle. If you ride like this for any period of time, the clutch will be ruined.

I only takes 5 minutes to pull the cover.

another simple thing to check, try moving the pvt cover around while its making the noise..i found on my old magnum that the rubber seals that bolt to the engine and tranny on the backing plate had been fatigued causing the cover to sag..what i did was put an L bracket on the bolt(pvt cover) by the swing arm and used a spring from the bracket to the frame of the quad to hold it up..it worked well..ive heard of others having similar problems if the cover has been stepped on

What wears the buttons the most is any kind of acceleration while the bike is under a load. The clutch moves in and out in order to alter the gear ratio. As this occurs the buttons have an extreme amount of pressure on the as the slide up and down the towers. This friction wear them out. No matter how you ride, eventually they will have to be replaced. They are still usung the same basic design they used ten year ago. I wish they would go to a ball bearing roller type system that would last longer and hold up to the more powerful motors they are using today. The important thing to remember is that when the buttons wear out, replave them immediatly or you will have metal to metal and your clutch will ruin in no time.

They also make hollow rollesr now that use buttons that install into the rollers so the bottons don't jsut fall out when they are worn. This is the only way to go when replacing the original buttons.

Hope this helps.

How often do the buttons normally have to be replaced? How do you check them? Do you have to have a puller to get the driven clutch off? Thanks greg!!
