the xplorers were great quads, kinda funny that it was a chain driven 4x4 instead of shaft, but im sure you got a great deal there. just look everything over, look for rust, listen to the sound of the motor and see if it sounds odd, rev it a little, and lean down and actually listen to the motor itself. when you get it changeing the spark plugs would be a good idea as there most likely fouled.

Mylhouse, I see you are in Mesa, I'd suggest that in your research you call Dennis at AZBADBOYZ.com since he is located in Glendale. I say this because you said you would probably not do the work yourself, and the Polaris dealers in this area dont have the best reputation. He not only works on the performance stuff but on stock Polaris' as well.

I would watch those front CV's,,,,,,,did the guy replace the whole CV or just slap a new boot on?

 

Thats him. Both their shops are in the same building and they work together. He's a great guy and he usually gives you way more info than you need (thats a good thing[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]).

Welcome to the forum. I don't know much about your specific model, but I will say look into taking a riding class. Go find some riding buddies. For safties sake you should really never go out alone. Have fun and take it easy until you develop some riding skills and learn your new toy. Last, learn how to do the routine maintenance stuff, and follow a religious regiment. The previous owner should be able to teach you what you need to know.

 

Yeah, I'd listen to what Bing said. If those boots were ripped for too long the joints may need replacing, which is costly. But i had mine for two years before i knew what a CV boot was, and when i went for a tune-up he said I had no boots left, and he had to replace both joints on both of them (supposedly).

Also, watch out for stumps and rocks on the xplorer. I donno why, but it likes to rip the bars out of your hands more than most quads.

And definetly have some buddies who know what they are doing. I didnt, and like i said above, I had no idea how to take care of these, so I didnt. But they are still quite alive, so they must be pretty tough. Even though this forum has some real knowledgable people and you can learn a lot, there is no substitute for an experienced friend.

 

He just replaced the boots. When I looked at them before he took the quad back, there was what looked to be fresh grease all over the place, and both boots were still on there. When he brought it back, he also said he had the U joints looked at, and they were good to go.
