I have a 2000 Polaris Scrambler 400 4X4. Anyone out there with the same machine??? How does it run? Top mph?? Mine just seems like it is missing the high jet, it tops out at maybe 55mph. My Honda 200 could do that. I understand that it is a 4X4, but even the Honda 300ex blows my tires off. Is this normal??? If so, what mods are available for this machine and what works?

thankz

You might do a search for "MudMachine" and ask him. He has one and, I believe, he is doing a major rebuild of it, including tranny.

Make sure it is jetted correctly and your airfilter is not plugged up. Check to see if the pipe is leaking or dented. Make sure the silencer is not plugged up. Does it get to 55 quick and then lay down or does it take a while to get there. I was racing 400EX's up sand hills a couple of weekends ago and had no problems beating them. Not by much but a bike length or two. One guy would get me every time by about a half bike length or better that had paddles. Does it seem to have power and just isn't up shifting. Even at over 6000 ft mine will run 65 or so.

Thats just it, it runs fast/smooth up to about 45 and then just drops off. It does feel like it is not upshifting. I checked and cleaned my air filter and everything looked fine. Can a bad spark plug contribute to this??? I bought the machine in June and have not checked it.

thankz for the help!

If it runs strong but just doesn't get any top speed you might have something up with the clutch. If it pulls hard at full throttle at a low speed but high RPM it's definitely the clutch. Try and figure out if it is more throttle and load related or speed related. It could be that the secondary clutch isn't working and your just over reving the engine. Does it out accelerate the other people you've ridden with and just not top out like them or do they out accelerate you as well?

Try taking off the belt cover. Assuming the belt looks OK look at the pulleys. Is the front pulley shiny all the way to the outside, or does it look like the belt never made it very far out? Also check the rear pulley. It should be shiny pretty much to the center. If there is no evidence of the belt running this way, it isn't upshifting properly. This will tell you IF it isn't upshifting. WHY it isn't is up to you to find out.

Mine is about the same but makes it up to about 60 mph. It is really strong from 0 to 45 but kinda putters out after that. I am getting it checked this week as I install the Aaen roller clutch. I am surprised that with my HPD pipe, V-Force II reed valves and air box mods that it doesn't go up to 65 or 70... Maybe it's the speedo thats under-adjusted.

Xplor,
I have a real problem with my speedo being accurate. It wont read faster than 50mph.I know that aint right. My Sportsman reads 57mph,and I can beat my Sportsman pretty bad with the Xplorer. I tell the dealership about it,and they pawn it off on the over sized tires.===Bill

POL...
If ya REALLY want to get everything you can out of the Polaris 400L, You REALLY need to talk with Rick Ritter from RCR. He is VERY well versed in the mythical workings of the PVT system. Also, spend the few dollars to purchase Olav Aaens PVT tuning handbook. THere is enough information in there to thoroughly confuse you for years to come.. hahaha...
Also, if you plan on doing any mods, talk with Rick about what works best with what, I have seen posts on here in the past of people spending lots of money on a bunch of brand name parts. Only to have poorer performance than stock and a bike that wouldn't stay running.
RCR has a web-site, I think its rittercycle.com.
