I purchased my Xplorer 3-10-00.Around the 5th of this month,I took the quad back to the dealership for some warrenty work, before it ran out[6 month warrenty] on the 10th.

My problem?
In high range,on a HARD take offs, the quad did'nt seem to have the snap it used to.I felt something weird in the PVC cover until I reached 12mph,it goes away[after 12mph] and everything feels fine. The dealer calls me and tells me I need a new belt.I only had 550 miles on the damn thing.I checked the belt earlier,I thought it was fine.Steve, the mechanic said the belt width was fine, however, there were a few glazed spots on the belt, causing my noise.I give him the ok to install a new one.

Now the damn quad wont wheelie [low range] more than 2 inches.Im pissed. It used to wheelie DAMN good before this new belt.Steve said to break in the new belt and than see what happens.I road about 60 miles over the wk end on the new belt, on various terrains,it still dont wheelie ANYWHERE like it used to.Im confused to say the least.

Yesterday,I installed a new white primary spring that Rick Ritter sent me last week. The quad seems to accelerate harder, however,I called him today and ask him to send me the green one,I'll try it next.

Anyone got any Ideas why I cant wheelie it anymore?
Thanks,
Bill

Bill
could the new belt possibly be slightly larger than the old one? does the machine take off at the same RPM as before?

or maybee steve messed up the jetting on your carb hoping you will come in and buy a new clutch or other preformance enhancment.

later

Bill, sorry you can't get it up like you used to.
We are talking about your quad aren't we?
How is it in low range?

Bill, maybe they sanded the belt to remove the glazing instead of replacing it. As I'm sure you know, the clutch system grabs the belt from the sides so even a little wear causes slower , less effective launches. I have been changing my belts every 400 or so miles . They would probably go 10 times that long you just lose a little more omph on take off each additional mile. When I install a new belt it will wheelie easily in high. After a couple of hundred miles it no longer likes to do this. Just part of the price you pay when you have the highest hp. 4x4 quad made.

Bill,

Is this Steve really as good as you stated in past posts. I remember the infamous post about that amazing clutch modification(heel clicker)that Steve backed out of. He seemed to have screwed around a bit there. Maybe he is not that experienced. Go to another dealer and get a second look taken. It is still under warrenty... As for me, my Xplorer does not wheelie. Either it can't or I just don't know how!?!?

Good luck

check your clutch buttons. if they are not in good shape you will lose alot of power. a friend of mine had a 99 scrambler 500 4x4 what had bad buttons when he bought it. mine had a ton more power than his did. think about an HPD clutch kit, i put one on my 4x4 and the low and mid range are alot better and back shift is faster

I dont notice any differance in my engagement speed with the new white spring. It is suppose to be 300rpms higher.I cant feel it anyhow. The jetting is fine.I'd know it if it were'nt.

The belt was definately changed,I noticed that yesterday when I installed the white spring.

Xplor,
Steve is the mechanic that repaired my Sportsman correctly after all the other dealers screwed me.I cant take it anywhere else.I have 3 dealers within 20 miles. One decent one,two AWEFUL ones. The others are quite further and I know nothing about their reputations. You mean to tell me that your Xplorer dont wheelie in Low range either?Anyone else ?

The buttons are fine,I checked them yesterday while changing the spring.I'd say I asking for to much, except it used to wheelie before taking it in and having the belt changed.I have a Polaris manuel, somehow,I;ll get this figured out.===Bill

Change your secondary clutch buttons... and while you have the cover off, "Deglaze" the primary sheave surface...
NOTE: Do not do this by having a buddy hold the throttle wide open while you wrap emory cloth around your wrists and "floss" it down into the primary sheave while the engine is at max RPM.
I do this every time I change a belt. Between the water that people get in them, and the small fragments of rubber and dirt that get ground into the metal, it can actually become VERY slippery and cause the belt to not hit as hard. To be honest, I Do this with the engine idling, but I am VERY cautious and I do this AT MY OWN RISK. If ya aren't familiar with the clutch system, and you don't have good dexterity, just take the time do do this with the engine OFF. (Thats my disclaimer)
Another thing that will cause Primary clutch woes, There is a bushing in the primary clutch cover plate..( the plate that has six bolts around the perimeter and a large bolt thru the middle) When that bushing wears excessively, the clutch will "knock" or get noisy. It also will cause uneven wear on the belt because the outer part of the sheave will not hold straight.
The bushing is about .75 cents. But worth its weight.
Good Luck!

Mudmachine,
No signs of water/debree entry anywhere inside the cover. There was some black dusting from the old belt,I blew all that stuff away when I installed the white spring. When the green spring comes in,I will deglaze the primary sheave as you mentioned.

Im also familier with the white nylon bushing in the primary clutching. It was very appearant yesterday when I changed the spring. It was in excellant shape.

As for changing the secondary bushings?I need an education on this.I'll read up on it in my Polaris manual, off hand,I have very little knowledge of its funtion.I appreciate everyones help.===Bill

Bill,
I have a 00 Xplorer 400. It is all stock and it would never wheelie for me. If I was on pavement in low range it will only bring the wheels up a little bit.

Xplor,
I was watching for you to post the part # of the clutch kit that you have on your Xplorer. It really sounds like the one for me. I sure would appreciate it, if you still have it. Thanks.
