rev limiter on a 500 Sportsman/Xplorer?

rev limiter on a 500 Sportsman/Xplorer?
Does anybody know how to bypass the rev limiter on a 500 Sportsman/Xplorer? I am having trouble with it spitting and coughing (running Real rough) at higher RPM's and wonder if there might be something wrong with it.
