Thanks Bryce. It all makes sense now that we factor in the ability of the steel to absorb some of the energy. Does the steel twist or something? That's hard to imagine.
For the average non-engineering background person like myself, I thought steel, being so hard, would translate 100% of the energy to the other side. I knew I was missing something.

seems like both would compress but they don't it works like swaybar on a car. it has a small amount of movement but also allows to have better handling. If your worried about it you could always get the swaybar link quick disconnect kit for rock climbing or what not.
