800 trail riding today I had a few scares!!!
#1
Yea a few of us went out today in the mud to play. I rode with a BF and the big Honda, as well as some sport quads. Us big boys keep up with the quads. We got to the tight trails and all was good. Then we got to the STEEP hills. These hills are almost strait up and range from 15ft-35ft. Well my buddie in the BF made a new climb. I wasn't paying attention and I went up it. Well I get a foot from the top and the back tires broke loose. Damn, I forgot the AWD switch. So I stayed on the handlebars and held the brake wile my buddie with the BF latched on with his winch. I then flipped the switch and drive up the last 2 foot without the winch. I wanted it on just in case. He made fun of me forgetting the switch. Well later we get to the same little hill again. AHH, I remembered the switch. I hit the hill with some speed, and that nice soft 800 front suspension bounced to the Right on the climb. Well their was a tree at the top. Needless to say the brush guard held up good. I pulled the brake again leaning on the bars and I start to slide down the hill. Luckly it stopped sliding after about a foot or so. But let me tell ya. It feels like you are going to the bottom. Their is almost no hitting a tree if I were to roll back down. This time I got winched up.
Later we hit some other hills. This is where I noticed my issues with the front suspension. I go down a 12' hill then have a flat spot then another 12' hill to climb. Well the flat spot has a very slight raise to the center of it. So when you go down the big hill you gain speed. Then you hit the raised spot and the suspension bounces the front tires off the ground, and makes the start of the hill climb a little scary. After I noticed it on this hill I payed more attention to it on other hills with the initial impact of the front suspension when you hit the base of the hill. Then it wants to launch you front tires in the air on the rebound.
It was a good lesson learned. I guess I will have to turn the preload on the fron springs a few clicks and hope it goes away.
I also noticed it bounce on a landing in the front.....
All in all it was a good day.

Sounds like you had a good and eventfull ride. Mine did that and that is why I put Works struts in. Way better then stock. By the way, you will see no pre-load on your front springs.

Where could I find them? So you say it will be the same if I click the front a few notches. It won't get any stiffer to keep the bounce out?
Do you have the Dalton Blue primary? Or is that against the rules in your class

There are no adjustments on the front springs at all. What you have now is all you'll get. I got the Works from Dennis Kirk. I got the struts for a Scrambler since they have the same travel as the 05 Sportsman's. And yes I do run the Dalton Blue and like it a lot. I looked through the rules and nothing is said about clutch springs. Been told it's not much different then changing sprockets on a chain drive and that is aloud.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!it looks like a G for the works shocks and struts. I may have to get a spacer to tighten the front up or something.
The Dalton Blue? Is that for a spacific quad? When ordering. I talked to Rick about it 2 weeks ago and he acted like he had no idea on that spring for my quad. Maybe someone else at his shop sells it for the 800. He said their is nothing out for the 800 performance wise.

Ahh I just reread your last post. You have the Works Springs not the whole deal......Do you have a part # that I could look up and check out. Their site is HUGE....
The scrambler strut has a different rate I take it? Did you try the springs on the stock sportsman strut by any chance?
I'm an idiot. I just figured it out. You did git the works. You got them for the scrambler since they are not listed for the 800........WOW that was an investment. Then again you got to pay to play. And it looks like you play hard.
Did the Blue spring pull you down from mid to top speed? I run with a BF on the weekends. I know he has a little more down low or so it seems. His quad looks very torqueie (sp). But his is also on his stock 25' tires that look like they belong on a big red 3 wheeler from the 80's. Those things are round with little nubs for tread.

These are what I got. Works Strut As far as the spring goes, just ask Rick for a Dalton Blue. There is no specific atv that this spring goes to. With this spring it takes off like stock, but has a much better mid to top performance.

Ahh I see what you did now. You changed the strut and left the stock springs in place. This made a big difference huuuuu. Not bad for $250+
I think I am ordering the spring tomorrow. I assume the K&N is better than stock, or at least I can clean it all the time without buying new paper filters. Still needs a bigger breather on the air lid. I know it is bigger than the 700. I can't believe the bike even runs with that little hole.
My brother has a 700EFI is their a good spring to get bottom and mid out of it. Just thought I would ask. you have been a big help thanks.....

ryankmiller,
WHat setting are your back shocks on????
I noticed that the more the rear sags the lighter the front becomes. I have mine up about half way, and it seems to make a difference in handling.
