Broken shift gear on Sportsman 800
#1
We broke the small shift gear in the black plastic shift case on the side of the transmission where the shift linkage rod goes into on our Sportsman 800. Anyone else having this problem on their Sportsman? Im sure its due to slamming it in and out of forward and reverse when plowing snow but the gear is a pretty weak piece. We will probably make a heavy duty gear if other people are having problems. Let me know your thoughts.

I have problems putting it in gear sometimes, it's like it gets stuck a little bit. I haven't had mine a week and am already having problems with it. The digital fuel guage disappeared off my screen. Didn't know how much gas I had or anything, looked like it was an inch or so from being empty. Didn't know that it still had a Gallon and a half left, so called it quits. Took it to the polaris dealer, they didn't know what the deal was, said it could take up to 2-3 weeks to get the part in. THen I asked them what the biggest tires were I could put on there without making it pigeon-toed. THey said anything bigger than stock would void my warranty and that it says that in the instruction manual. That really pissed me off, then when I read the instruction manual, it didn't even mention tires in the warranty part. I love this bike but if I would have known all this crap, I would have thought real hard before buying it again.

i have been doing commercial plowing with a Sportsman since 1999 and i have yet to have a problem with a shifter.
there is nothing to "SLAM" while shifting plowing. there is nothing to "slam" shifting period. do you know that the foot brake must be pressed to put the ATV in PARK or HIGH?
there is nothing "weak" about a Sportsman.
any time you guys are ready to sell your 800s there are plenty of buyers on this forum lined-up to buy them. just let us know!

well polaris always are having problems. my friend has a sportsman 700 and it has more time in the shop than riding are running time. i mean come on they need to make a better 4-wheeler. it might be the biggest but it is not the best just becuase of that. our honda's are the most reliable 4-wheelers that we have ever had.

Big shock, another Honda guy bashing Polaris and he never owned a Polaris. My buddy this, my buddy that. My Polaris has been 100% reliable. If you wanna start throwing stories, I can about a Honda from this weekend.
Brand New Rancher 400AT leaking oil while riding the Hatfield McCoy trials. He stopped in front of me because a sport quad in front up us had his rear diff hung up and Kevin shut his rancher down. Then we saw the oil in the puddle he was sitting in. Checked the level of oil, seemed ok so we kept riding back to our rooms. Next morning we cheked the oil again and had to add a quart.
3 weeks ago Kevin's dad had his Honda Rubicon in the shop because of a non-shifting transmission.
Every manufacturer has their problems, Polaris, Kawasaki, Honda, everyone. So get over it, if you dont like Polaris then dont come here, go hang out in the Honda Forum.

That same gear broke on my new 04.5 700 this winter. They fixed it under warranty. Well at least I think it was the same gear. Not sure if the 800 is different, but a gear in the shifter broke and it was stuck in low. I too plow, but never, ever slammed it into any gear. I babied this thing. I started it one time to plow, warmed it up, plowed a strip in low, and it was stuck in that gear. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the gear and I paid someone else to plow my tennants out.
