800 Knocking???
#12
Doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary for one aof the polaris twins 600/700/800 efi or carbed they kind of chug at a low idle but there definetly shouldn't be knock. It's ahrd to tell from what one person hears as well. What sounds like one thing to one person sounds like somthing else to next person. Unless this is a very obvious sound adn is creating an extra amoutn of vabriyion or somthing I wouldn't worry about it either, you shoul dtry abd find someone in you area with the same quad and run the next to each other maybe.

mine does the same thing, buddies 03 700 carbed sounds the same, 04 600 too. I have a hard time ignoring it. Tech told me to put a loud stereo system on it so i couldnt here anymore. taking his advice, anyone know a small loud, marine speaker that will mount on a lock and ride box?

I just bought a new 800EFI Camo. It is awesome but I have the same engine knocking at idle. When I accelerate the noise completely goes away and I agree with arkrider it gets louder after the engine is warmed up. I took mine back to the dealer because I did not want to cause any engine damage and was told that it is the hydraulic lifters that will make this noise at idle or low oil pressure. I have riden the Grizzly and Brute Force and nothing compares to the 800EFI and each ATV has its unique noises which you need to get used to. It is nothing to worry about, although annoying the best thing to do is ignore this and enjoy your ride.

If it worries you that much, be sure to aquire the extended warranty. that way if does go bad its covered. though with this many people hearing the same noise, if it is a problem theyll probably have a recall. anyone heard of any recalls on the 800 yet?

I noticed that my buddy's 05 600 and another buddy's 04 700 EFI both knock at idle. It goes away as soon as you come off idle. I think it is related to the twin cylinder engine. I noticed it on both and although it seems like it may be a "quirk" or "normal" for these twins........it sounds lousy.
I don't have it with my single cylinder 400 and aside from from 'HELLHOUND' above, I don't recall people with the single cylinder 400's and 500's mentioning it.
Both of my buddy's machines are low hours. The 600 is brand new and has about 10 hours on it and the 700 EFI only has (I think) about 35 hours on it. I would be interested to hear from twin owners who have accumulated some significant hours on their machines to see if theirs did it initially and then stopped afterward.

could just be the injector noise but the engine belt will make a similar slapping/knocking sound also if it's coming apart and the shredded pieces are going round and round slapping the plastic, I found this out friday morning while riding in WV during our Hatfield McCoy trip. you can click on the "my photos" link to see pics of what the slapping belt causes to the belt cover.

My 500HO does it, less than 10 hours so far. My buddy just bought a 500HO LE and his does it too. It sounds a lot like engine knock - the engine knock you'd hear from an automotive engine with low oil or a rod knocking. I'm not so sure that's what it is, but that's what it sounds like. I posted about this when I first got my machine (month ago?) and the response I recieved was that it was normal.
*edit - just sitting here thinking about it, it's probably the thin oil that Polaris uses not circulating throughout the engine very well at idle.
