Default Trail Boss Clutch Question

I have finally got this 1988 Trail Boss 4X4 250 running good. When I stop the ATV in low range or high range, as it stops it gives a kind of jerk like you have applied the brakes. It does not come to a slow smooth stop, it kinds of jerks as it stops, Is this normal? The ATV has very low hours on it and has not been used for several years but all the parts wear seems like almost new. The buttons and all visible parts in the clutch looks like new. I am fixing this ATV for my great grandson, but I have been having a ball with it. Is age 74 about the right age to get into ATVs?

Any age is the right age. I hope I can still ride at 74. Sounds like your clutch weights are sticking or the sheeves aren't moving freely. The clutch might need a good cleaning to loosen things up.

Default Trail Boss Clutch Question

Thanks a lot. The clutch is clean on the outside and shows no wear, looks new. I though the clutch sheaves might be sticking. Do you think it would be OK to spray it good with WD40. I don't want to disassenble the clutch, if spraying won't do any harm. I rode it quite a bit today and it seems to be loosening up a bit. most times it comes to a smooth stop now.

wd40 was my dad's magic fix all. It's good stuff, but only temporary. Don't get it on the belt surfaces. If you can get to where the sheeve moves back and forth, clean up the shaft with some fine emery cloth. The clutch looks intimidating, but cleaning it up good would make you think you have a new atv. good luck and welcome to the club.

Thanks. I will clean the drive clutch shaft with fine sandpaper and spray it with WD40. It seems the driven clutch would have to be disassembled, but I will try to spray it and not get any on the belt.
