Default (2) busted cv boots on 05 sportsman 500

I busted a front and rear cv boot today riding down a cleared dirt road. Don't know how it's possible to do that, however, I am looking to invest in a good set of stop sticks or cv guards, or whatever they're called. I need advice on the best type and where to buy them. I'm really dreading to find out how much it's going to cost me to fix this frommy dealer. I wish it could be covered under warranty, but I'm sure it's not, and I don't know how hard it'll be to try it myself. Anyways, any help with this would be greatly appreciated guys. Also, are the factory cv boots from polaris good, or are their some better and heavier duty ones I can purchase aftermarket?

Thanx for the info on replacement boots. Do you have any suggestions for the guards to cover them?

The gorilla boots are way stronger than the polaris ones. I had one of their heavy duty boots installed on my 500. As far as the boot guards, I have heard good reviews about stick stoppers. If you find Chris on the polaris forum, he can give you more info. about the stick stoppers since he has them on his sp. Unfortunately, I can't remember his nickname on here.

I read about guys getting boots torn up just running down dirt roads, 10 miles on the quad and they are torn.
I don;'t know where you guys ride or what you do. I have 1500 miles on mine, local riding in brush ect.... Hatfield/McCoy....Windrock TN......Harlan county KY.......I have no problem whatso ever,,,and I don't baby mine at all. What in the world can you be doing to tear these boots....

Haven't gotten a clue what caused them to tear. My dad has a 1995 Honda 300 which has been through everything. He is a logger, so this thing doesn't ever look like a four wheeler anymore. All the plastic has been busted off, etc. It has never had a torn boot. My 05 sportsman has been babied! I was litterally driving down a dirt road when my friend stopped me, because of the smoke from the grease on the exhaust. All I can figure is somehow a stick popped up and caught it just the right way. At that time i didn't know about the front boot. When I loaded it on the truck and went to tie it down is when I discovered it. There were 4 other people riding with me. I was third in the line and nobody else had a torn boot. Just not my day.

check the inside of your cv joint when you have the boot off, there may be a sharp piece from the factory cutting your boot

ppope, welcome to the world of 05 sportsman boot problems. ive torn 5 on mine. 4 of them were the front inner boots. a set of strongmade stickstoppers from c and s sales(http://www.candssales.com/) done the trick for me. a set of thermoplastic boots will help also. the boots are easily replaced. on the front you just remove the wheel. take the axle nut off. remove the lower ball joint nut and you can use a ball joint fork to remove a arm or you can do like i did. take a pri bar( i used a tire tool). pri down on the a arm while tapping on the a arm (where the ball joint bolt goes thru) with a hammer and it will break free. make sure you screw the nut back on the ball joint before tapping on it because if you miss and hit the bolt you will damage your threads. once the lower a arm is loose pull out on the strut and push in on the axle to free it from your hub. once free give the axle a yank and it will pull free from gear case. the outer joint is the one you remove. cut clamps on boot and slide boot away from joint. lay something soft on the floor and take a rubber hammer and bump on the outter joint and it will fall off. if you buy your own boots get a tool to put the clamps back on with. the rear you just remove the wheel, axle nut, brake calliper, and rotor. take the top a arm bolt out and flip the hub down and push alxe in to free it from hub. same as front give the axle a yank and it will come out. its not hard at all once youve done it one time and it will save you some money. and the stickstoppers are $99 total to your door for front and rear. shipping is free. good luck. any ? ill be glad to help.
