we went through two chains in past two years we are using 520 o ring chains
is that better then a standard 520 chain?

I think the second chain was adjusted properly could the sprockets be worn machine has a lot of hours on it.

a inch of play in chain when machine is loaded is that proper adjustment or should we go looser.

I would say get a chain and sprocket set. As for the chain tension, depends on what vehicle it is?
