Is hub oil really motor oil?
#1
I have read a lot about alternative lubricants here - important to me cause I have no local dealers. I just read a post that hub oil is actually the same 0W-40 motor oil used in the engine. Anybody actually used the motor oil for the front hubs?

Thats what I read in a pile of posts. But then I saw this thread with "Philfixit" who claims to have worked at a Polaris powertrain supplier (in another post) saying otherwise.

My service manual from Polaris (2001 Sportsman 500) says ATF type F fluid can be used as a substitute to polaris fluid for the hubs. DO NOT OVERFILL. Plug is to be at 4:00 or 8:00 position before replacing the fill plug.
