Default GPS speed - 2002 vs 2005 Polaris 500 HO

Since I do not have a GPS, I need to ask this question of the forum. From what I have read here lately, it seems that the new 500HO models only do about 55-58 mph. Is this true? I have personally seen a 2002 Sportsman 500HO hit 62 mph on a GPS. Does anybody know what the reason for the difference is?

I'm not positive as I don't have any mechanical explanation... But I was told the '05 was indeed slightly slower in top end to get better bottom and mid range. While a lot of people on this forum like to go 60 mph, very few of the actual majority of the ATV buyers ever do. It is kind of awkward to go slower with newer models, but that's what I heard. I wouldn't write that in stone though.

My 04 hit 97KM/HR(60MPH) on the GPS. At that speed give or take 4 MPH does not make that much of a difference.....

Its in the clutching, more on bottom end as opposed to on top.

So.... with the larger 26" tires on the '05.... Polaris made a change in the clutching. Did they change the Helix, secondary spring, or primary flywheel weights?

Our 2005 Sportsman 500 also has a gps top speed of about 55 mph. I think the stock speedo was over by about 2 mph.

I don't like the engine braking. It just works too well. I don't have to use the brakes because the engine braking will stop it in it's tracks. I like to coast a little more. Can't be good for the gas mileage.

55 mph isn't bad for such a big and heavy machine.

I dont know exactly what they changed, you will need to look at the parts list manuals on line and compare or in the service manuals.

I'm glad to hear that the parts manuals are back on line. I will have to check that out. I got 58 MPH out of mine yesterday before I ran out of road.

gps 55 mph in 1/3 mile---- being chased by a 2002 sp700 with white fangs. (see jimmypsp700 photos)

speedo was right on. rpm 6800. which I think is as high as you can get the 500. Has anyone had higher rpms on their 500?
