Is Sportsman 400 worth buying?
#1
Hello,
I am just about to buy my first ATV...
Looks like I can get new Sportsman 400 non-EBS at really good price. Dealer clearance before new model comes in.
Is it worth buying?
Other alternative is 500 HO but this would cost me nearly 50% more.
Is the difference in engine performance and EBS worth the premium?
Best Regards,
WojRW
BTW: Happy you out there in America. The average dealer price of the 500HO in Poland is US$12,121.-

What are you going to do with it ? In 2001 I bought 99 335SP and have a great time with it, hunt, fish ,haul my camper and take the wife and kids for trail rides. I have also gone on rides with the big boys(450cc to 700cc) with no proublems. I want to get a 500HO someday but with two young boys money is tight. I also saved about $4000 by buying the 335. My 335 has a top speed of around 45 mph and the 500 is about 60mph. I usually travel at a max speed of 30mph so the 335 is OK for me. This is just my opinion, I am sure you will be happy with any Polaris

The 400 is the very same machine as the 500 except for 74cc (the "400" is actually a 425cc engine), a smaller carb and EBS. I got used to riding a 1987 Polaris Trailboss before there was any such thing as Polaris EBS so I don't want or need it anyhow.
My top speed is 52/53 mph.......but that doesn't really matter much because the trail riding we do is not condusive to high speeds. I ride with 3 other Yamaha Grizzly machines ( 660cc 4x4) and I go anywhere they do and power is never an issue. Sure they can out accelerate me and have a top speed about 65.......but again.......it doesn't matter because "drag racing" is not what we do. We trail ride. And in that context the Grizzlies have nothing on me.
The 400 is still a Sportsman. It has all the same features as the higher cc units.......for considerably less cabbage $$$.
I have yet to have any significant problem with mine. The Grizzlies seem to break axles very often. Between the 3 of them they have broken 16 rear axles over the past three years........one guy 6 all by himself. They've gotton real good at replacing them now. This stuff doesn't happen to the Sportsman because it's built more heavy duty......and as such it weighs 100 lbs more.
I recommend the Sportsman 400 highly. Now is the best time of the year to buy and great deals can be had. Jump on it!

If you are the type of person that must be the first one every where than " NO" do not get the 400, But if you are just out to have fun on the trails and see the country than a 4oo will do you fine. It will go every where a 500 will go but it will take you a little bit longer to get there.
