Default Stacking headgaskets for scram 400??

I have a 14 to 1 compression Hot Seat head, and instead of schilling out another $80 for a hot seat replacement, could I simply stack a few headgaskets together to lower the compression?

or is that not a good idea?

thanks

Ken

I guess you could try it, but my understanding is you can;t stack head gaskets without risk of blowing them up. especially under that kind of compression.

I'd be surprised if it worked, but less if it didn't.

that's funny

I'd like to try it, but it seams my local "stealer" wants $25.00 a gasket, that's right, for just one headgasket. that is how much a headgasket costs for my old 300zx!

the guy at my local machine shop told me he'd remove enough from the head to allow the use of pump gas, for just $30.00

how much difference would 14 to 1 be from 12 to 1, power wise?

thanks

Ken

I wouldn;t machine the head down personally, its an expensive piece and with a new dome you could sell it latter. You may want to look for a standard head thats been machined to 12 to 1 there has to be some floating around here. or trade with someone who has a machined stock head or a twelve to one dome.

In theory it would be 6-8% power loss 14 to1 to 12 to . What kind of gas were you running with the 14 to 1.

conig, I bit the bullet and ordered a 12:1 dome last night, weighing my options, that seemed to be the best one.

and I never got a chance to run the thing yet, but this is the story...

I bought the quad from a friend at work, he told me nothing about the head or any of the mods, he just told me that he couldn't keep the thing running, so I bought it pretty cheap

I then tear it apart and find the 14:1 dome installed and asked him what gas was in it...he said just pump gas arizona 91 octane..DOH!!!

so I haven't run any fuel thru this thing yet

well theres your problem. I was wondering if it would be run with 93 and an octane boost but I doubt it.

looks like a pretty good buy you got there.

yeah, bought it for $1200 with new tires, paddles, hitch and rack and all the mods listed in my signature. spending $170 for the top end work and $80 for the new dome, should be a good running bike for not alot of money.

hopefully there is nothing else wrong with it (crosses fingers)
