High/Park Lock out Mechanism
#1
Hey, I have a 2005 ATP 500 HO. Today after I shifted out of high gear, I was no longer able to shift back into high or park, even when stepping on the foot brake. Would the high/park lock out mechanism be the culprit? Any other thought? What might I look for? Thanks for any hints.

Thanks for the replies. Could be frozen moisture, been riding in the deep snow, maybe I will try thawing the machine. So, the lockout mechanism is a spring in the shifter drum? If it is removed you no longer need the foot brake to shift? Anybody done this mod? Thanks for the help!

Actually you can override the Park/High lockout real easy. There’s a spring attached between your foot brake and the lockout mechanism. Just hook the spring to something else so there’s constant tension (the frame?) and no more lockout (assuming everything is working as it should)
At first glance not having to step on that pedal to hit High or Park would seem to be desirable. But after giving it some thought, when we’re in deep mud (or for those who plow snow) it’s nice to have a positive stop at low and reverse without having to concentrate on hitting the right gear. I don’t know, it’s a 45/55 split for me (with 55 being stock function). Maybe I’ll try riding with it disabled for a while and see how I like it.
As far as problems with shifting the first place I’d look is inside the black cover on the side of the tranny. You could have some ice in there causing the weirdness.

I was talking to my dealer the other day and on the 06 models you no longer have to step on the foot brake to shift into HI or PARK. I kind-of liked having to step on the foot brake because it was easier to "toggle" between LOW and REVERSE without having to look at the display each time. I asked why and he said people were forcing it into HI or PARK and causing problems. It wasn't the owners that were doing this but the people they loaned their machines to.
