Default Awful griding sound when I back up.

I have a 1997 Polaris Magnum 4x4 that is making a really bad sound when I back up. It doesn't make it when I just back up slow but when I back it off the trailer when it starts to free wheel it makes a really bad grinding sound, or if i try to back up a little faster.

Could that be something with the linkage not going back far enough to engage the gear all the way, if so how can I check that? Then how can I fix it so that I don't affect when it goes into high gear? Do I lengthen or shorten?

Is there any other suggestions that anybody may have?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I am a newbie, always rode 4 wheelers first time I have owned one.

youll need to replace your silent chain inside the tranny. i had the very same thing happen to my scrammy. while your in there, you might as well replace both internal chains, and replace all the seals too. make sure to inspect everything for extreme wear. the chains and seals will run you about $120.

If I have never worked on a ATV before is this a project I should tackle by myself or should I be taking it to a shop to get it done?

Thanks.

I agree with scramblerXrated, your silent chain (reverse chain) has stretched (skipping over the sprocket) and is in need of replacement. I replaced mine on my 01 Sportsman 500 HO and although not a technically difficult job it is time consuming. Not sure of your quad but with mine the tranny has to be removed which means all the rear suspension components have to be removed and the clutch assemblies. Once you have the tranny on the bench it is not difficult to split but just about everything must be removed to reach the chain. The reverse gear assembly if the first thing that goes in therefore the last thing to come out. The job took me about 2 days but I did do other things while I had it apart. I'd sure hate to pay a dealership for what I did as I'm sure the book repair cost would be extremely high.
Good luck.

Anybody have a good idea of a place to find the parts, other then polaris. Please put any web links that you may have for parts. www. bikebandit.com did not have the parts I was looking for.

Thanks.

your best bet for those particular parts, is to get them from your dealer. that way you can match up the parts before you buy them.

I have been told by the previous owner that this could be a linkage problem because he never had this problem before, he figures if I make it a little longer that it will just start working, I am going to try it tomorrow night and see what happens. Anybody do this before, is it pretty easy, I haven't even looked at it yet but always like pointers.

Thanks for all the previous replys.

Maybe you have found the "smoking gun", the real reason the previous owner sold the quad. Like I said to have the dealer replace the reverse silent chain is a very expensive job. If the PO is not mechanically inclined and did not want to go to that expense his next best solution is to sell it. It happens all the time.
Just a thought.

I totally hear where you are coming from, for now i am going to try the linkage and give him the benefit of the dought because he's from my around my home town and works where I used to work and even though we never met hopefully is more honest then that. If not he showed me where he lived so, well, let's just say you don't do that to a guy you plan on screwing over. You meet at a predetermined location that has lots of witnesses.
