I am new to Polairs bikes so I need some advice. I am looking to buy a used quad and would like to know the differences between the trailblazer 250 and the Scrambler 400 models. I will only use the bikes in the sand with paddles. Is the 400 a two or four stroke? The scrambler that I am looking at is 2wd. I need plenty of power for the sand hills. Thanks

 

Depending on your size and riding experiance you have to realize both of these are 2strokes and can be easily modded to make more power for less than an extra $400.A piped and clutched 250 trailblazer has ample power to pull anyone under 200 pounds very good and has lighter steering than a 400 Scrambler (2 or 4 wheeldrive).A 400 Scrambler 2x4 can be a handful for a beginer and modde 400 can get a beginer hurt very fast.

 

thwe 250 and the 400 are ergonomically besically the same. the 400 is a 2 stroke 36hp motor. be prepared to change out the stock piston for a wiseco when you get it. its not that expensive and way worth it the stockers are prone to having the skirt fall in the crank case.

 

I would definently get the scrambler even though i have a 250. Much more power unless you go through all the trouble like I and others have went through to get our trailblazers up to par with scramblers. Save yourself that trouble and get a scrambler which is a powerhouse right out of the box.

If you're looking for dune power and have your selection down to these two machines, definitely go with the 2wd Scrambler 400. It's an oil-injected 2 stroke. Then go talk with RickRitter on this board .. he's the man to talk to about modding these machines... I am completely happy with just the Trail Mod on mine, but consider one of his race mod kits for the top end power you're going to want...

Like Conig said, do the Wiseco piston right away, as that is the weak link in the 400 motor.

 

No, this is like a Camaro RS V6 or a Z28 5.7L V8 comparo (or Mustang 6 to 8 cyl).

If you need power (and have a little experiance 4wheeling) get the Scrammy, add a HPD pipe and heavier primary spring and you will be rocking!!!! Call RcR.

I love my HPD/RcR Scrammy, it rips!!!!!

I keep hearing about the weak stock piston on the 400 Polaris. I have owned the 400 Polaris's since 1994 and yet to experence the weak piston breakage problem. The '94 Polaris had 1620 miles when I changed the piston because of noisy slap. Then ran quad th 5600 miles and sold.
My '00 400 Scrambler ran for 3 years with stock piston. Been to Glamis to OK to MO. and never a problem.
My '03 400 Trailblazer is going on its second trip to Glamis and been everywhere, I also pull a 60" trailmower with this one as the first Polaris. This 400 is listed below with the mods.
My BUBBA BIKE doesn't count, its for bringing out when the other 400 loses a race.
Still trying to get one of those stock pistons to blow up. I think the warm up is the trick, run a 400 for 3-4 minutes and check my exhaust temp gage, still not warm yet, takes about 5-8 minutes of easy to moderate riding to get good warm up before WOT.

That's all I do is dune my 400. I love it. You would be disappointed with the 250 in sand. The 400 can be made to run with anything out there believe me I know. The 400 Sport/ Srambler shine in the dunes.
