I am a new member to the forum and a new owner of a 1997 Polaris 400 sport 2 stroke. Let me say first that I love the auto trans and electric start and the overall performance. I did not receive a service manual with the bike and after trying to find an engine oil fill and seeing a dipstick in the trans. I'm thinking I should buy one. Can anyone give me some general maintenance advice as I still have not found the engine oil fill? Also any problems I should check for or expect in the future??? One more thing, does anyone have a stock pipe and silencer for one of these? The pipe on itnow is really loud and would like to get something quieter.

TIA, Jer.

ahhh the 97 sport i miss the hell out of mine dont ever let her go...lol...
now there is a dip stick in the motor by the carb that holds about 3 1/2 ounces
of sae 30 oil. the dip stick is hard to see because it dont look like a dip stick it has a large
flat head screw driver slot in the top. for the tranny there is a special oil polaris makes for it but alot of people use a substitute. "you can do a search". as with any 2-stroke you should do a compression test to see how tight your top end is. also is the oil injection still conected or is it pre mix?

Oil inj. is hooked up and works fine. I wonder if I need to use an injector oil like a snowmobile or if any 2 stroke oil is fine.....Top end is fresh and has plenty of compression. Being a former alky banshee owner I was impressed at how well this 400 2 stoke pulls. Any info that anyone can give me here will be greatly appreciated. After looking this thing over for a while it's quite a bit different than my old Yamaha.

If you want the stock exhaust, you should be able to find one pretty cheap on Ebay.

I would stick with the Polaris 2-stroke oil recommended for that machine.

peace

2 stokes do not have engine oil like the 4 strokes do.
The counterbalance requires a small amount of oil as Jayblazer mentioned.
