Default Need some trailblazer mod help

I need some advice on some modifications that I can do to a new Polaris Trailblazer 250. My stepdad has 4 of them. He has two older models, I think around the 98 model year, and two brand new ones. The new models, are much slower than the old models. He told me that if he could find some things that would help, he wouldnt mind throwing around $500 a piece in them to pep them up a little. The local polaris dealer quoted him $800 for a pipe and clutch modification installed, which sounds a little far fetched to me. I have a brute force, and I installed a ignition module that helped immensely, is there one they make for a trailblazer? Also, as for the clutch work, I figured that the dealer was talking about a spring change. Could I do this myself, and if so what kit would I need to make it happen. He would like some more low end, but I think that he would really like more speed out of them. If you guys can help me out I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

You should call Darrell at HPD, he has an AWESOME race mod kit for the 250's. It consist's of boring, porting and polishing the cylinder, a bigger carb, modifing the cylinder head and a pipe and clutch kit. They say it will out run a 400 but I don't know? The kit isn't really all that exspensive considering what all your getting. Or you can call Rick Ritter he's a good Polaris man, he can really help you out also.

I would check on hpd, hot seat performance, or aaen for the parts. A pipe and clutch kit should run for about 500 give or take a little. As for the do it yourself part you have to have a clutch puller, u can get it off of hpd for like 25 bucks, but i have my stepdad tear into my clutches. Dont know how hard it is for the clutches.

Best bang for your buck on the 250 Trailblazer is RcR aka Rick Ritters stage one kit.It is less than $400 and comes with every thing you need K&N filter, pipe, silencer, clutch kit, main jet and instructions. Not to mention the very best phone help you could ask for.You wont need a clutch puller for any thing. But you will need a second set of habds to preload the secondary spring.

I would also recommend the Rick Ritter pipe and clutch kit. I just put one on my 2005 Trailblazer and it sounds and runs awsome. There is a huge power difference. It now sounds like a 2 stroke dirtbike. I love that sound. It has alot of power alot quicker with the pipe. The kit is under $400. And that is nothing for the great performance you get out of it. My friends are all impressed with the power and sound difference as well.

I would also recommend the RCR stage 1 kit. Although it will never keep up with the bf it will still be pretty quick. IF he really wanted some power he could send the cylinder to rick to get ported. The pipe, port job and clutch kit makes a huge difference. You can get all this for much less than $800.

I would go with a pipe and clutch kit from RCR,it will feel like a new quad. I have a reed conversion kit on mine and it rips. It may not be the fastest, it only tops out at the mid 60s but it gets their FAST!!

I have a 2002 Trailblazer 250 that I bought on Ebay, and have been modding to compete in Scrambles here in Florida. In hindsight, it was the probably wrong quad to start with, but I've got too much invested to turn back now. I put an HSP pipe on it, along with Fox struts/shock, DG bumper, Moose bars, Motion Pro twist throttle, HSP injection block-off, and a few other odds and ends. All together I've probably got around three grand in the bike, and it runs pretty good, but it's hard to keep up with the 400's in my class.

Anyway, I've got two questions along the lines of this thread. My first is about the Mikuni 35mm TMX flatslide I bought for the quad. I installed it without the airbox and put a K&N filter on the carb, but I can't get the jetting right. I tried the 340 jet that HSP recommended, but the thing just blubbers when I open the throttle. I thought about trying to mod the stock airbox to work with the carb to richen it up a little, and also have a Dial-A-Jet that I haven't tried with the TMX yet. Any advice about getting the mixture right would be greatly appreciated.

My other question is about clutching. I still have the stock springs installed, so I know I'm not getting the most out of the pipe. Does the clutch kit make a really big difference in the performance? Also, how hard is it to install, do I need all the special tools I see online, or just regular tools and a couple pairs of hands?

Thanks for your feedback, happy trails!

If you didnt use a matching HSP clutch kit you are going to have a hard time even jetting the thing to run right because you are not in the recomended rpm range of the pipe.I bet you have a dead spot in the low to mid range. The clutch kit will make a huge differance and is simple to install but you need a second pair of hands to load the secondary spring.
If you want to hang with the 350 Warriors and 300EXs you will need a good port job.If you want to run with the 400s you will need porting plus a reed conversion.

Thanks for the reply. You're right about the flat spot, but it goes all the way from quarter to full throttle. The weird thing is that when I put the stock carb and airbox back on, the quad runs fine. I installed a Dial-a-Jet and cranked it one click lean, and it seems to run good. I really was hoping for some more HP and better throttle response with the TMX, but so far have gotten nowhere in several attempts. I may try an airbox mod to use the stock airbox with the TMX, maybe by cutting down the airflow a bit I'll get back in the ballpark.

As far as the clutch kit goes, I've been told by several people there's a noticeable difference. I do alot of woods riding, so I'm looking for better pull off the bottom and through the middle, and am worried the spring change will push me too much toward the top-end.

It's tempting to go with the porting, head-work, and clutch kit to get that extra power. I just look at how much I've got into the thing already, and am reluctant to drop another $500-700 on the engine, and still have a quad that weighs alot more than the competition, with a somewhat inferior suspension. I think the Blazer is agreat trail machine, and the automatic makes it alot of fun for pleasure riding, I just don't think Polaris had competition in mind when they built it.

Happy trails!
