Trail boss v.s trail blazer
#1
So Ive got a Scrambler 400 and I ride 95% trails and 5% sand (although were are going to try to even that ratio out a bit more). My wife wants a quad and I was thinking trail boss. It would be great in the low speed technical trails that we have alot of around here. Her dad has one and I like it better than my scrambler for trails. But when we went to the dunes that trail boss was really working in that sand and we found its limits. I wouldn't say it was a waste of time to take it because it was good for the old folks, but my wife could use a little more poop. Would a Trail blazer do better in the sand? Has anyone ridden both in the sand? She dosen't like to ride my 400 in the trail because of the power curve of the 2 stroke. Is the 250 a little more mild mannered on the low end?
I didn't mean to make this a long story......I want a quad that she can sit on and mellowly ride up and down choppy slow trails and also take into the sand and climb big dunes that I can get up with the 400.

Ritter performance makes a hop up kit for the trail boss that wakes it up pretty good a bud of mine has it on his bike... jet, filter, WB Eseries silencer, and clutching... for @ $325-350 I think.... That and you can play with the gearing a little bit to help with the sand..... I also think there is a big bore/ stroker kit for that engine as well but I dont know much about it...

Never had ours at a dune, so really can't help on that answer. The wife likes the Blazer much more than the Boss. Says it's steers easier. She also doesn't like the spring I've got in the Boss, engages at too high RPM for her.
You can get her the Blazer, and like jhama said, get a hold of Rick. The Blazer is much more tuneable than the Boss, and can be made to run very fast if she wants more power later.

WE have had both and my with likes the Boss over the TB .SAys it rides better (bigger seat) and it does ok in sand but needs a clutch change(EPI pink primary) stock or lower engagment and gives it more top rpms.
The TB is a blast if you pipe and clutch it but then you are looking at more $$$$ and you have the 2stroke to mess with.

just a thought,
another consideration may be to find a used 500 2x4 scrambler? they're cheap, they do GREAT in the sand, have as much motor as a stock 400, and have a very linear power curve. the downside? they may not be easy to find because they were only made in a 2x4 configuration for like... 2 years i think, from 01-02 model year... maybe 3... just a thought. whatever you buy, enjoy it

I had a highly moded 250 and it was a blast. Very reliable, nice ride plenty of power stock , lots of mods for it but I sold it and bought the 330 Trailboss. My moded 250 was not woods friendly. It would overheat on slower technical trails wich I do 90% of my riding. But once I go hill climbing or racing it was a beast. I needed something more reliable. The stock 250 is plenty reliable but like most guys I needed more power. I liked the way the 330 rode. Very comfortable on long rides, racks, oil cooled, wide plush seat with decent power. The 330 has the power but it is slow. I have done lots of stuff to it and it is a blast to ride now. Still not the fastest but faster than the SP400. You can look at some pics I have of it. Not sure what it would do in the sand but it does very well in the mud. I think she would be good with the 250 in the sand. But if you do most of your riding I would get the 330 and add some go fast goodies on it.
Jhama rick is no longer selling the WB silencer for the 330 anymore. He said it is too hard to get. He now sells the FMF Megamax with a RCR pipe. It is awsome. I bought one a few weeks ago. It adds alot of bottom and mid torque with about 2-3mph on top. The stock 330 will do about 45mph max and with the silencer, pipe, jetted, EPI red primary, HPD gold secondary, K&N, and newly added 36t sprocket it does about 55mph. I am also running 24" tires so that helps on the top speed.

Any thoughts of finding a used Trail Blazer 400? Best of both worlds. Fast, easy to handle and drive.

I've got a Scrambler 400 and that is the same as a trail blazer 400. Its hard to navigate over big tree roots and tight trails at low speed. There is no easing on the throttle with that thing. And she kinda outrides (I hope she doesn't read this) her ability so I'd like to keep the available power down a bit.
I found a 2002 trail blazer for $2000 and I think that I am going to get it. If she decides that she doesn't like it I bet her Dad will trade her for his trail boss. Thanks everyone.

I put in a vote for the Scrambler 500 2x4. I generally don't recommend that machine since I love the power of the 400, but the 500 is good at crawling without the 2 stroke snap of the 400. Find a used one for fairly cheap.
