I have a new set of SP700 springs I would like to install on my SP500. Does anyone know of the easiest way to remove the old ones and install the new ones, other than bringing them to the dealer?

 

It should not be a hard job if you have a spring compressor tool. Compress the existing spring, jack up the bike and remove the upper nut on the strut. Remove the old spring.

Now, place the new spring on and compress it. Replace that top strut nut and release the spring. repeat on the other side and you are done.

Becareful not to pull the CV Joint apart when removing the strut. It will add more time and grease to the job. (I learned the hard way once.)

You shouldn't even need a spring compressor. I didn't anyway. But like Bloombastic said make sure you don't pull your cv joint apart. It results in a mess and a few hundred in repairs (mine did anyway).

The job will go a whole lot easier if you compress the spring. The cheap easy way to do this is get yourself three cargo ratchet straps, the kind without the hooks. You only need about 2’ of strap so you can cut them off so they’re dedicated to this purpose or leave them long, up to you. Fish the strap between the spring coils up near the top then down through the coils and out near the bottom. Cinch it up and crank it snug. Do the same thing on the other side of the spring.

You can accomplish this with only two straps if you can keep them on opposite sides of the spring but sometimes as you tighten them they’ll “walk” around the spring to the same spot. That's when you need the third strap. As Bloombastic mentioned, be careful you don’t pop the shaft out of the outer CV during this procedure. Support the bottom of the strut housing with a jack or some blocks while you’re working on it.

 

The easiest way I found is to take the ball joint nut off the bottom of the a-arm. pull the a=arm down. Take the axle nut off. Pull the strut housing out away from the axle shaft. Tie up the axle as not to pull it apart. loosen the two strut shaft bolts and slide the strut housing. down off the strut. remove spring. When your putting it back together. Use a floor jack under the strut housing it lift the entire assembly which will compress the spring. tighten the two housing bolts and reassemble the rest. I just figured out it is much easier to do than it is trying to explain.

Did you install the 700 springs to increase the front end load capacity?
I ask as that is my next project to beef up the front end sage from carrying a plow.
There are aftermarket springs from various manufacturers but not much info on load ratings and soforth. Are the 700 spring noticably different from the 500? How much was the cost for the stock 700 springs? Did you research the other brands?
Is the strut/spring change job an hour each or more then that, How did you make out with it.

I have 700 springs on my 500HO ... i think i paid $100.00 for the springs and for the dealer to installed them on my machine.

Yep a HUGE difference ... but i have a winch and brush guard on the front.
