Popping noise on take off
#1
I have a '00 500 Sportsman that runs great. However, I notice occasionally a popping noise upon taking off from a dead stop. Is this something to be concerned about? My x-mission oil is clean and correct level is maintained.

I have had the same concerns with mine. I beleive that the source of the noise is the slack in the chain and that is why you only hear it upon take off. All the SP500s have a small amount of slack in the chain. My 98 did it a little worse than my 2000 probably due to the chain stretching over time.

The chain Greg is talking about is in the chaincase, or commonly referred to as the "transmission". Polaris automatics do not have a transmission. The clutches and belt act as the transmission. The chaincase is essentially a gear box that transfers the power from the driven clutch (back clutch) to the shaft drive (in the sportsmans case) in either high or low gear. The best way to understand the chaincase is to go to the Polaris website and download the parts manual and look at a breakdown of the chaincase. Hope this clears up any confusion.

technically a transmission is what it is referred to,if it transferred power to a set of wheels such as the fronts it would be called a transfer case..the chain there referring to is located in the transmission and if its sloppy enough to cause popping noises i wonder how much longer it`ll be before it starts slapping the inside of the case or jumping gears? i know they will stretch but i dont think its a good thing to be making popping noises if thats what it is..oh and the belt system isnt referred to as a transmission it is known as the clutch system
