A better filter
#1
I have a Kand N filter on my wifes 03 scrambler 500. The places where we ride can get very dusty. The dirt does go thru the outer wear and the filter. I have tried this idea. I purchased a Uni filter. This comes with a foam filter attached to a metal cage and a slip over foam pre filter. I have installed the foam pre filter over my Kand N filter. Big difference in the amount of dirt trapped in the filter. I did not notice any airflow reduction or power loss. If it gets real dusty I might try lightly oiling the foam pre filter. Just trying to help save my wifes machine.

i run the UNI foam filter and clean and oil it every time i go away for a long trip in the sand. Nothing ever gets through that thing. to be honest the K&N really doesn't give you any noticable HP anyway, if filtration is your priority and the UNI works (when oiled properly it works AMAZING) i'd just run the whole UNI filer all the time. Just my $.02

Thanks. I just got this 500 scrambler for my wife. It has an air box mod FMF exhaust clutch kit jetting and all that stuff. I have ridden for 30 + years and foam air filters have always been fine for me. My cr500's never needed any special air filter for more power. I was thinking like you that Kand N filter claim of more power is probably just hype. Hey do you oil just the inner filter. I have in the past only oiled the inner one.

i oil both of them actually, every bit helps one thing to note, the machine will run a little rich directly after this while some of the oil burns burns off, but after that it will be fine. good luck
