Default 800 gas milage

on my trip today went 54 miles and filled up at 24 miles and got about 16 miles per gallom which i thought was pretty good for having 60 miles on it. we played a little harder coming back so i think it went down to about 10 / gallon. you the old saying you play and you pay. but it was worth it. is that what you guys are getting for milage?

Doubt it, cause looking into the gas tank is very depressing....about half gone...BooHoooOh well, I knew what to expect at first.... I don't own a 800 but am looking into one. On another forum a guy told me who has a grizzly and a SP 800, that he gets about 21-23 depending, that is cruising speeds, says 1 big factor is oil. He had put a 10-30 type oil in and the mileage crashed, went back to Polaris 0-40, and is now back getting 21-23 MPG. At that he says he is on par with his grizzly.
This lad seems to ride fire roads and up and down mountains, so no real hard racing or mud bogging.

liam, don't worry bud mine only got about 8miles to the gallon when I first got it. We avg about 25-30 mph when I got the 16mpg. But coming back we pushed it and didn't get that good. i think if i rode reg. i could get about 60 miles on a tank all easy. of couse i brought 2-2 1/2 gal. cans w/ us just in case. i went w/ my buddy who has a brute force 750 and he used 1.9 gal to my 1.5 gal in the same milage so i didnt think it was all that bad.

I ride with 3 other 800's and we live by a rule as far as gas goes. "If they sell it, buy it" Wisconsin is fortunate to have refreshment establishments every 20 or 30 miles.

I'll get between 11 to 13 mpg from my 800, and I'm not heavy on the throttle thumb.

Here is the link he sent me, NO one commented on the oil, maybe that is your problem. Read below!

Subject: The secret is in the OIL!

The first oil change on my Sportsman 800 EFI was done at 20 hours, with my usual oil... Castrol Act-Evo 10W40, which I've used for three years on my Grizzly and other ATVs.

Not too long ago, I noticed (never did before) that the Polaris PS4 oil is 0W40 when I thought it was 5W40. So I thought hmm... maybe I should try it, see what happens.

So I did... it was due for its second oil change, 50 hours later (70 total), and I put in PS4 and went for a ride.

I rode 71 miles and used approximately 3.25 gallons. Yep. If you do the math, that's 21.84 mpg. That's a new best for this ATV, and is nipping at the heels of what my Honda Rincon used to get early in its life when I had it (23-ish).

The last 50 hours using the 10W40 was getting me 12-14 mpg at best. Now with PS4 it's up above 20. Now granted the ride on Saturday was a bit more liesurely, but not terribly. I'm inclined to say that my previous rides that got me 12-14 would have been in the 16-18 range with PS4.

So I'm sold... PS4 it is from now on.

Rob
