I bought a Yamaha Grizzly 660 and first thing I noticed when doing maintenance was anything bought that said "Yamaha" on the label was gold plated in cost. Same thing for my son's 500 Predator Polaris. I wanted something cheaper but still good to use on my machine.

Then I started reading the forums about oil filters and am scratching my head over the heated opinions about which brand is best and which one will do in the engine if used. At any given time all the brands had both good and bad said about them. Fram seems to be on the hot seat for bad mouthing at present. It would seem that a simple piece of filter element wrapped in a tin canister isn't rocket science and would be hard to screw up! You would also think if a product truly was bad and harming engines they would be sued or boycotted by the buyers and run out of business.

I have reached the point where I refuse to pay $12 or $13 dollars for a filter I can buy somewhere else for $2 to $5. On my Grizzly I am currently using a wal-mart super tech st6607 filter for $2.07 and Shell Rotella T motor oil at $2.22 per quart and having great results with both! I have 4 cars and trucks that all have been run in excess of 200,000 by me or family members and all we used was wal-marts in house brand oil (super tech) and cheap oil filters, all are still on the road! Also a few frams along the way!

Any one got any thoughts or opinions on this? Any input is greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

I'll agree with you about the Brand name parts. They are typically made by a company like WIX and made to manfactures Specifications. Wix will make a like filter typically better than OE specs for less. The cehaper filtres typically have fless fiter medai area and can't hold as much crud. I typicallt pick a midle of the road filter when it comes to price but typically never buy OE. There are much better options out there. I'm an amsoil dealer and I use they filters in everything I own. For a nominal fee you can get become a dealer or prefered customer and factory direct pricing. I typically pay about 4-6 bucks for most filters. PM me for more ifne if your intrested. The Amsoil powersport filters are made by WIX. If your not into Amsoil your local NAPA should be able to do a cross referance for you.

 

like u said fram is the gold standard for crappyness... the use paped end caps! ac delco, wix, and amsoil are the three best choices(napa is made by wix) puralator pure one is also a good filter but im not sure if they make cycle filters. hope this helps

Purolator pure one PL14610 fits polaris quads, i've been usng them for years. Same filter fits alot of bikes also, fits my Kawasaki Ninja.

 

Any suggestions on where do you buy a Purolator pure one PL14610 filter?

 

Advance auto and PEP Boys carry purolator, sure other auto parts stores have them. It is a little deeper than stock filter-longer by 3/4 inch, giving a little more filtering area.

 

I've been using Fram products for many years, my vehicles get regular service by me. I have never had an engine issue.

Seen too many studies about how poorly Fram was designed and assembled. Purolator always came out on top or near it. Fram was always at the bottom. Used to think Fram was a good filter until I started doing my own research. I'm sure 90% of their stuff has no problems, but I'll probably be in that 10% bracket with my luck.

 

The EFI's may be different, but Polaris used the same filter for almost all their 4 strokes in the past.
