Foot Brake
#1
Just traded for a 04 600 sportsman,I noticed the foot brake does not work.Has plenty of fluid but have not bled them yet.Does polaris have a problem with the rear master cylinder. Also where is a place to buy one reasonable.Thanks.

Mine hasn't worked since day 1. I gave it back to the dealer and told them to purge/bleed/whatever.....fix it. It still doesn't work. The rear brakes work fine from the hand lever....it's a completely different system serving the caliper. But those Polaris foot brakes are notoriously useless. I guess if you screw with it enough purge/bleed...etc...then you can get it functional.......I can't be bothered because I never had any desire to use it anyway.

My parents have a 95 425 magnum 4x4 and a 97 magnum 425 2x4 and the rear brakes have worked from the first day they bought them. My 01 Scrambler 500's rear brakes work great by themselves, but the 02 Scrambler 400's rear brakes don't work at all. I can't count the number of times I have bled them and they still don't work.

i just got my 01 scrambler three weeks ago and my rear brake wasnt working either. took quite a while but i finally got it bled. i had to take the cap and rubber insert off the brake fluid tank to get it to bleed right. i used a third of a bottle of fluid to finally get them working good. the great thing about it is now i can stop so much better with the front brake since the rears work with them now

The reason for the foot brake is so you can actuate ONLY the rear brakes when descending a steep slippery slope....like a gravel pit wall. When descending a gravel pit wall, you want brakes, but NOT front brakes. That being said........The foot brake on my '00 Magnum 500 doesn't work for crap either.

if you read the polaris owner's manual it tells you that the rear foot brake is a auxillary backup brake. it is a safety design in case of main braking system failure. my rear foot brake quit working one time in 3 years and all it took was the correct bleeding procedure and its been working fine since. i only test mine when i first start riding to see if it works. you cannot bleed the rear master cylinder without a lot of pumpng between each opening of the bleeder screw. that little master cylinder does not move very much fluid. i bet i pumped my pedal at least ten times very rapidly each time and only got a few drops back at the caliper. took about ten cycles before the pedal came back. i cannot tell why it loses it's pedal.
