Default Ran my sportsman dry

Hi all,
I have a 04 1/2 500 Sportsman with a carb.
Saturday i was using it fairly hard. I let it idle for about 5 minutes while checking bolts on something and all of a sudden it just quite, stalled.
I knew it was low on fuel but didn't think it was that low. I gave i quick try, looked in the tank and saw it was dry.
I topped off the tank with fresh fuel and gave it a crank, nothing.
I cranked for awhile trying to draw it through. not even a pop. choked it, pumped it. nothing.
Next i pulled the plug and it was dry, kind of gray but as i said , I'd been working it pretty good.
I had a spare plug but i'm not certain it not carbon fouled. Didn't work.
I just picked up a fresh plug. but it will take a few days to get back to it.
Anyone have a similar problem after running it dry?
I thought maybe the float stuck but it probably would foul the plug with fuel.
I pulled the fuel line off at the carb and it flows freely. so the fuel filter isnt clogged.
I'd think that cranking it should draw fuel to the cylinder.
Thanks for any input, I fouled one plug about a year ago and have never had any problems since.

i had this problem on my 2002 sportsman 400. i took apart the fuel pump underneath the front left fender and sprayed some carb cleaner into it and the put the plates back on and it started right up after it got some gas through the lines again.

My 500 was way hard to get to start after sitting all winter. Full choke and turned along time before it kicked and ran. Good luck...

Thanks for the input,
I guess i haven't looked for a fuel pump, Does a 500HO have one, i thought it was gravity fed,
I'll put a fresh spark plug in and keep cranking on it, I may have gotten air in the lines.

If you run one of these completly out of gas they will be hard to start. It takes a long time for the pump to start gas flowing to the carb.

Let it sit a while and keep trying to start it.

Do NOT mess with your fuel pump.

After a while it will start.

try dumping a little gas in the plug hole. enough to fire it up and help prime the fuel pump. i would be leary about spraying carb cleaner or any thing esle on the rubber diaphams in the fuel pump.

i would not sugguest to spray solvents or carb cleaner into your fuel pump... you can do what stendori said, or you could just spray some starting fluid into the carb, and crank it over. and get it pulling gas again.

once you have it started, it pulls gas with more force, rather than just cranking the starter.

Do NOT use starting fluid. Never!

can i ask why cornbread2? i've never had any troubles with my engines after using starting fluid. you don't need alot, just a little shot.

Starting fluid with either is very hard on your engine... there is little to no lubricants in the fluid... your engine will eventually become dependant on it if you use it too much

There are some starting fluids that are lubricated that arent as hard on your engine
