Winch "eye opener"

just remember the winch you buy is rated for say 2000 lbs and it bogs down, well if you think a 3000 lb will do better think again..the battery is what makes it bog down, the recharging on atvs isnt strong enough to keep a battery full when winching..it will do the same thing unless you add more power to the winch

Do you know why the 30 000 lbs (yes, thirty thousand pounds) would work, even on an ATV, because it's hydraulic. Oil power, when compared to electric power is unlimited!! Yes you have to get that oil moving, but I'm pretty sure it eats less electricity than a 2000lbs electric.
BTW, it's a truck winch...I don't know how much the beast weights. I'll try to find the mag and page where I read about that.

Zoro,
Don't those hydraulic winches run off the power steering pump? Also with the weight of one on a quad I don't think that the back wheels will stay on the ground... ...this may present some problems.
Maybe by the time you add on a hydraulic pump the quad would be heavy enough to hold the winch though... ...then again it probably wouldn't move unless you pulled it with the winch.
Nice story though (do you by chance have a 75 HP scrambler?).

There are different winch ratings for straight pulls and lifting. The winches in question here are not rating for lifting, but for straight pull. One thing to understand is that the winches pulling ability decreases as more cable goes on the spool the pulling power decreases. It states this very clearly in the owners manual. The power stated for Warn winches is NOT measured with a ****** block. This again is stated in the owners manual. My Warn 2500 can lift my Rubicon off the ground.

a 30,000 lb hydraulic winch on a quad ? you need to go buy a jeep or something to mount that winch,or better yet just buy an army surplus 6x6,i think it comes with that for a front drag winch..your obviously doing things with a quad that arent meant to be if you need more than what a warn 2000 winch will do for an atv..i havent even had to use a ****** block and ive been buried up to the fenders in that black suction mud that smells like raw sewerage and have been able to pull it out..what your thinking of doing is a waste of time, you need a pump or an auxilary shaft(p.t.o.) to power that winch.good luck mounting it,let me know if i mean how it worked out for you.

I had a friend of mine that was tired of the battery stall when pulling out Grizzelys, relax just a joke, But what he did was take out the trunk in the back of his SP500 and drop in a gell cell 12v battery. He said it went in really easy and works very well.
He has the warn 2500.

No, I don't have a crappy 75hp scram, I have a 2000hp banshee!!! haha.
This whole story wasn't really serious...though it would be cool to do it. And yes, I think the rear wheels wouldn't touch the ground with such a winch on the front!!
And electric stuff don't really concern me YET since I don't even have a battery and a 60W output! ahahahahahahahah

I have seen (in dirtwheels I think) a kid proudly sitting on his prairie (?) with a 6000lbs winch!! This is real and seemed to be working!! Anyways, my first buys for a 4x4 would be (in order)friend(s) with strap, fisher pants, snorkels, big tires/wheels, lift kit, and last a big winch on a second battery (one battery only to start the quad -or engaging 4x4 if Polaris- and the other for all electrical luxury).
But for now, I'm sticking to a 400lbs quad
