K&N AIRFILTERS
#11
So, would a power kit help out the horsepower? All i can say is someone put in a K&N in and he felt a difference is throttle response. He said you get around 15 with a K&N. I just want something thats low in price that will give my quad some more power.

The powerup kit consists of a filter and outerwear (maybe?) and a jet kit. This will likely not actually give you horsepower unless your machine could use a bigger jet, which is only due to flow modds, (exhaust or significant intake, such as a clamp-on) The clamp on K&N will grab you a few horse because it eliminates the restrictive airbox, but a K&N drop in will maybe help throttle respons MAYBE. overall the filter is not a bad buy, but jets are only $3 and unless you need to rejet you will hurt your performance by changing them. (remember that you cannot take a given set up and simply make more HP w/ jetting. jetting is only either right or wrong, and can be both too lean or too rich and it will actually hurt you) So since these things together would only be about $53, the expensive Powerup kit seems like a waste of money. These kits sell to people who are uneducated about proper tuning. If you can post your set up, we can tell you what jets to run (or at least come pretty dang close,) and save you a lot of $. my $.02

most of us agree that about the best pipe combo you can get is the white brothers (pure polaris) muffler and the rath racing head pipe. It totally changed my machine and did away with the pipey nature of the predator motor and made it pull from the bottom to the top like a four stroke should. as far as jetting, with the rath header, the Pure polaris muffler, and the K&N filter around a 155 on the main jet should be good and around 47.5 for the pilot. that's what i'm running exactly, and it works GREAT!

I had a K&N for my truck and trashed it becasue of problem with it allowing dirt into the intake system (Dusted Turbo). The dirt particles start to wear away the metal turbine blades in the turbo housing. Many Turbo chargers have meet and early death due to K&N. They don't trap the small particulate dirt at all. It leads to more contanimates in your oil and wear and tear on critical engine components. I'm going to try a dual stage foam filter kit and see what that does for the dirt stopping on my machine. If that does not work it back to the stock paper unit until donaldson comes out with s synthetic media replacebale filter. More efficient than paperfoam oiled cotton gause and it lasts longer. It will not fall apart if it gets wet.

I installed a K&N filter on my 05 SP500 this past weekend. As soon as I turned the key I noticed a difference. The bike started up easier than usual and settled into an idle a little quicker. Once I started using the bike I felt that throttle response was a little crisper and quicker but I didn't experience any real gains in performance. I didn't expect to find much of a difference with the filter but was pleased with the crisper response to throttle input that I experienced and the ease of startup. That in itself justified the purchase for me. Next thing for me is an exhaust upgrade after I do the 3-light conversion & reverse override conversion this weekend.
