Why does it GRIND?
#1
I have an 93 350 4x4, chain drive, 2-stroke. From time to time it will grind when I shift from neutral to reverse or high. Is this an internal problem? When I shift, I do in a slow controlled manner, but this does not matter. Any ideas ? Thanks Monty

My Trailboss is terrible. I have to turn the key off just until it is about to kill, then shift and turn back on before it dies in order to get into gear sometimes.
What new shifter did you get 400L 4x4?

Engage the brake and it will stop the transmission from spinning while shifting. You might have to rock the machine slightly while letting off the brake to get the gears engaged.
The idle speed should be around 800 RPMs for the best shifting.

montyburns, that because you have to wait the rpm's fall down low before engaging the shifter in or out, that way
the pressure into the tranny is at lowest level, you just have to shift then when motor drop near to
idle.

Of course I let the engine return to idle. This was obvious, it's just that i've never owned a chain drive machine before. The front sprocket looked worn, so I replaced it last weekend. The same old grind was there unfortunately. Sounds like a common problem with this machine. The thing is when you hear this grinding with someone on it , you automatically say " WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING". They reply "NOTHING just shifted from reverse to high". Then I jump on the machine, and the grind repeats again. Hmm... sorry I say, um er... gotta be something out of alignment. I will say one thing about this machine, I have a '05 Outlander Max with new Carlisles, and that old 4x4 Trailboss has older Superswampers and that thing just follows me in the mud or whatever with no problems. I guess I'll have to live with the problem or sell it or get something a bit more modern.
