I got a 1999 polaris sportsman 500. i got it stuck today and for some reason it is stuck in hi range . even when i pull the shifter back to neutral or reverse it still goes forward. but i can put it in lo range and it switch. plus i was having a little trouble with my 4 wheel drive only 3 wheels pulling.

Typical. Sorry, but my buddies 4x4 went haywire, and his tranny. He has a 700sp. Someone else on this forum was also having 4x4 problems similar to yours.

I know someone on here surely can help this fellow with some suggestions. Haven't had either of these happen to me personally. I do know that the hubs are real picky about oil type and level. Get the correct hub fluid from your Polaris dealer and change it. Be sure to get it to the correct level also. This probably should be at least checked and possibly changed on a yearly basis. On the shifter issue I'd just look for bent linkages, sticks or mud caked in places it shouldn't be. Sometimes just a good clean-up and visual inspection will reveal the problem. Hope this helps. Maybe others will put their $.02 worth in.

i agree w/ fire. a real good place to start looking. make sure ur axle is turning on that side and u'll know if its the hub for sure.
