Is it worth it?
#1
Hey guys. First I want to say hello as a new member. I own a 92 Yamaha 250 2x4. It is a good old rig and is on light duty as long as it is in my stable. I am retired. I live in a rural area with lots of creeks etc. I do a little fishing and use my ATV for that, plus a little lawn work. Problem is, I am not as agile as I once was and when climbing little banks around the creek, I have to stand on the pegs and lean forward. I am not comfortable doing this at all these days. I am in the market for a 4x4 and would like to have a Polaris. I found one sitting beside the road this morning that is for sale. It is a 01 Sportsman 500 4x4. It seems to be in good condition. No busted plastic and looking underneath, I see no leaks, beat up skid plate etc. The owner asked $3,500.00. I offered $3,000.00. I would like to hear from more experienced folks about the price. Is it actually worth it? Did I shoot him too low? Please advise.
Thanks

I failed to say that he came back with an offer to take $3,300 for it. I am sticking with my original offer for now. His S/O advised him to sell it to me, so I'm thinking he may call me. ???

You are still going to have to stand up and weight the quad from time to time. The Sportsman will probably be a little easier for you, but is there any way you can give it a test ride?

If its in nice shape, and the hours/miles are not to bad, I dont think $3000-$3500 is terrible. Need to know a bit more though. Like the miles/hours, any extra's on the machine, are the tires good?
But if the hours are decent and the miles low, Buy It.

I appreciate all the replies. Yes, I did start it and ride it around in a circle, but didn't put it into 4 wheel mode. I know the man who showed it to me. It belongs to his step son. He tells me it is good and has been used very little since the stepson has owned it, which I gather is about the last 3-4 yrs. He bought it used also. I failed to look at hrs/miles. Knowing the family, I would trust his word on the matter. He says it has sat in his garage most of the last two years while the stepson works out of town. He used it himself while doing some fence work recently. This guy is a reputable business man in the area and has lots of holdings, thus very well known. He went far enough to say to his knowledge there was not one thing wrong with it. I will give them a day or so to think it over and call me. From what I've learned here and by asking around and ebay, I believe I offered about what it should bring.
Thanks again. If I buy it, you will most likely be hearing from me from time to time. If not, I will just be in lurk mode.

I failed to mention also that it has a bag on the rear rack with a passenger cushion, and a basket type affair (looks to be maybe 4" deep and factory built) on the front rack. Also a bag that hangs in front of the right knee with a bottle holder.
