i have always had yamahas just becuase that was the first brand i bought and i just kept yamaha. but i have come across a ploaris sport 400 or 400 sport for i think 1300. i dont know the year becuase i didnt get to ask the guiy any questions or drive it but i know it runs. we have a farm and like to go to the dunes in december. my dad has a beartracker and i bought a warrior. my dad would like it as another work quad but i think it has potential for dune usage also. (even if it didnt we would use it there anywasy we use the beartracker). but i think my dad is a bit worried about the 2 stroke thing. my question is even though it is a 2 stroke is it a good work quad to use for hualing pipe, and straw and feed bags, and towing trailers and stuf like that but still a good play quad for the dunes and trails. sorry bout the long post

thanks

i use the word work lightly. most of the time it will be used for transportation sometimes we may use it to spray or pull a trailer but nothing huge. do yall think it would hold up. also is 1300 bucks a decent price. it seems to be in pretty good shape the plastics dont look like there cracked, and the decals are mainly still there.

my brother found a 98' 400 about 3yrs ago guy was asking 1200 said it had just a new topend',kevlar belt and a pro clutch kit , bro talked him down to 1000 ! Had dead battery no kick starter/rope pull , rope broke on second pull; finally pulled it with Honda foreman. It ran real good and strong, only rode it up dirt road 1/4 mile and back and bro paid cash loaded on my trailer was dark when we got home. The next day we went to auto zone got a battery, then headed out to the mountain's for a good ride. When we got there battery wouldn't start her so i pull him off on my Foreman then we headed off for the trail's rode the loop's for about an hour, stopped to cool off and had cold drink's an sack lunch. When we went to start em' up 400 started right up, i let bro lead off we rode another hour or two taking a couple more stop's to cool down then started up again finished off the trip just about sundown got back to the parking lot just as darkness fell. Bro said let's go up one more time and i said i'm waiting on you, let's go ! 400 started and bro turned on the light's took off over the trail i was right behind him untill he kicked it i started after him but i was loosing ground on him it got to the point that i could see his light's going around the winding curve's. He smoked me good !! When i finally catch up to him at the loop's he was sittin' back laughing his 'can' off and ask me what was wrong with the big bad Forman ! Well i said i had stopped to take a nature break, and then took a short cut through the wood's passed him in the dark; and had long cup of coffee then back tracked through the wood's . Then came back on the main trail and sock'ed the throddle and got to the loop's just as i saw his light's go off . He didn't buy it, but i did lead the way back to the truck for the long ride home ( with little bro teasing me the all the way ) . It turned out to be a pretty good quad for about 6 month's then the 400 started loosing compression, i put new ring's in and it went another 8 month's before it start'ed loosing compression again ! I finally sold it for him an gave the foreman to bro and bought a 93' KQ 300 that our cousin had bought new a week before the blizzard of 93' hit (the worst show storm in over 100 yrs. since they start'ed record kepping report's for our region of the sunbelt ! I'd say that you should check out this 400 you're looking at,find out as much as you can about it before you start taking money; the one my bro bought wasn't research'd enough before he bought it. It could've been just a lemmon, or wasn't broken in right when it was new and maintained the way they should be. 1300 may not seem like a big investment compared to the price of these new quad's now. But i would get someone who know's alot about the two stroke's on these forum's than me or my bro did then; he now has's my KQ for his wife to ride. As i bought an 06' Arctic Cat 400 FIS TVR auto 4x4 in feb of this year ! This was something i thought i would never own ( a automatic belt driven clutch sytem atv ) , i don't have enough hours and under 200 miles on the cat; but it's a four stroke suzuki engine auto tranny set-up and is a very big utility quad ! It does have more power and torque than my old foreman and the KQ whitch both these quad's were manual shift's with the wet sump for engine and tran's lubrication, and they're both still running strong as they were when new ! ..............Good luck with what ever you deside on, and GOD Bless You all....................williebee

Ive owned a 400 2 stroke. I believe it was 95' , 96' or so. Bought it new and used it for three/four years with no problems whatsoever. It was used as a play toy, and especially a work horse, clearing snowmobile trails, hauling fenceposts on a homemade platform I created for the back rack, pulling garden carts filled with gravel and rocks, and finally pulling a double snowmobile trailer, loaded with both on my snowmobiles. As long as you use low range, it will work for you. I traded it for the new 99' sportsman 500 4 stroke and was surprised that the 500 had less whollop in accelleration and top end. What a dog that 500 was!!! Anyway, other than keeping the chains lubed and tightend properly, I'd reccomend and buy another 400 2 stroke in a heartbeat, if it ran and looked good. Good luck!!

its not as strong as say a sportsman for work but it does have alot of power for playing. i'ld say if your going to play more then work it would be ok but i wouldnt want it for a work horse. just my 2 cents

i thnk it may be good for you if you arnt using it for work that the utility is made for all the time. my other scrambler has the ball on it and its good for pulling. wish it had low range. ive let the belt slip a bit, pulling and rock climbing. they are a good quad for trails and dunes.

Hello again. Maybe I'm a little confused after reading some responses here. My 400 2 Stroke was an Explorer, which looks exactly like a Sportsman Utility machine, and not a Scrambler. Please dont confuse the two, like perhaps Ive assumed you meant the Utility version. You were talking about a Sport 400? . My Explorer (Sportsman look alike), was as much a workhorse as any other Sportsman Ive owned, and that's a few...
