have a 400 that was given to me by my brother.

This is the deal, quad looks in great shape top to bottom. Report that four wheel drive doesn't work, but axles spin. Did a search see the problem there. Engines locked up.

We pulled the fly wheel and starter reduction gearing, still locked up. Pulled the head and jug, needs a top end but ok. Pulled the cvt cover got the tranny side pully off, doesn't look like I have the rite puller for the engine side, get one tomorrow.

We can shake the fly wheel and the piston moves about an 1/8 of an inch.

We arriginally thought the crank bearings where seized but it doesn't look that way now.

Tomorrow I will get the manual and puller for the cvt but any guess whats locking it up?

It's a 95 that they say ran well but due to to many quads was not ridden in a year.

Quads from ohio, we are in louisianna now.

well, you need power for the 4wd to work becuase it is electronic, if u roll the quad, u will see the axels spin, but the hubs are what lock in for the front wheels, which is electronically done. also, was the engine seized due to lack of oil, or has it sat for a long time and it just wont turn over? It possibly could be the crank bearings, but i dont see how they could be seized up just from sitting?

Best bet on the motor being locked up would be the counterbalance behind the waterpump. If it is you are looking at alot of cash to fix it if it hasnt trashed the case.If it is trashed best bet is to part it out on ebay.

ftwflh has a likely cause of the problem - that is likely .

The darn bearing cages on the mains have likely came apart . I see that quite a bit too .

Keep your wrenches out --- get the cylinder off .. :-)

Well we don't have the puller for the cvt clutch on the end of the crank yet (going to get it on my way out now) but we kinda see whats going on.

Head gasket looks like it was blown. Head shows a blemish, not much of one, but one that shows a blown head gasket for more than one days ride.

Behind the fly wheel where you pull the gear reduction for the starter assembly it has a rusty thin oil feel fluid there.

Top end is off, doesn't look any worse than a worn top end that could have used some air filter maint., no signs of excessive heat.

This is what we are thinking. Blown head gasket, water migrated down to the crank with the fuel oil mixture, quad was parked for a long time, bearings or what have you rusted up. Then I believe some one either got it started or spunn it over enough to maybe make the bearings come apart, hence the lock up.

Not sure it went exactly this way but looks to be something like this.

Either way we have to get it apart and asses the damage.

We got the quad for free, she looks pretty sound and well maintained cosmeticly. I was thinking from the beginning that it was well worth fixxing.

We are just getting her back running and the wife and the daughters want it. Looks to be a nice quad, if she was running.

Looks like RR is going to hier from me and my wallet soon. But where else can you have this much fun!!!!!!!!!!!

If things check out ok fix it.But when you are done it wont be a ride for your wife or your daughter these things are extra hot and can be made one of the fastest, most powerful quads on earth

"it wont be a ride for your wife or your daughter these things are extra hot and can be made one of the fastest, most powerful quads on earth" Is this true? Mine is fast I know that well atleast was, Its got alot of kick in the rear acceleration. What can these things be made to beat? Ive got a 60 over wiseco piston and bore, boyeson rad valves, 38mm carb with ufo, K&N filter, airbox mod, HPD trailpipe, FMF turbine core2 silencer, Bald tires, Clutch kit. A port is coming too aswell as girdle and head. How fast you think that goes? I know these guys are most likely right in what they tell you, I thought I knew alot about quads but they have helped me out alot! Thanks guys, hope you get the quad going soon. Best of luck, Brian

Hey Brian with the right porting, pipe and clutching a 400 can hold its own with a modded Banshee.Your top speed is limited to the gearing on the 4x4 but a 2x4 can be as fast as a Banshee too witht he right gearing.
My last 400 Scrambler was bought for my wife but it got away from her the first time out and scared her.It was just piped and clutched(no porting)Still run even with a 660 Raptor that was piped.
