Default My '00 Scrambler 500 has a problem

Hi everyone been gone a while, didn't have a computer that would hook to the internet, lol. Old Windows 98 crap....went ahead and bought a new computer after 74 months since the last purchase, lol.
Anyways I'd like to get some info from you guys, my Scrambler 500 acts like it "running out of gas" sometimes whenever I try to get it up to speed and hold it there, say like faster than 40mph. Usually it will run fine if I let off the throttle and get on it again, but not always. I did hear it pop out the exhaust, too when it acts up. I've never had this problem before until after I installed the Polaris speedo kit for Scramblers. Do you think it may be the problem? If not, then I'm not sure what else to do. The quad is stock except for a K&N filter & that speedo kit. The fuel filter is about 20 hrs old, the old one actually looked just as clean as the new one. The spark plug probably has about 40 hrs. on it. Also the gas tank's reserve switch doesn't seem to work properly? It does shut off the fuel ok, it just allows the ON setting to completely drain the tank while out running it around (not cool!) Hmmmm......could a bad fuel line switch cause it starve for fuel?

Here are a few things to check.First clean and reoil your airfilter.Next make sure your petcock is flowing a full streem. Then check the feul vent line for a clog or pinched off.

Hey thanks for that reply. The air filter probably needs some attention, so I'll do that for sure. So far as the petcock goes, I'll need to check it. I didn't think of a fuel vent line, does it have a filter? If not, then I'll look more closely at it->this is the little hose up by the handlebar, right?

What does the spedo kit hook to? Make sure it is for your exact scrammy, they keep changing them. I'm on my 4th axle from durablue and they can't seem to send me the right one..........

Well I'm bringing this up to the top for an update on my Scrambler. The weather has cooled some and I got a day off work, so I unplugged the speedo wiring and re-installed the stock rev limiter and wiring. I found out that the speedo kit's instructions are labeled for a 99 Scrambler 500. I have a 2000 model, so what would be different between them, anything, the color of the wiring was all the same?
Well I took it out and ran it about a mile, slowed down and after I did that, the engine was running rough and then it died. I let it sit for about a minute and then tried to restart it, well it wouldn't start until I pushed the throttle in quite a bit. So then I decided to blow into the fuel tank vent hose and see what that would do. So I take off again and start driving it around for another couple of miles and it ran fine, but I noticed my right pant-leg was soaked, well it was soaked with fuel, fuel was coming out of the vent line at a decent pace whenever I was into the throttle pretty heavy. So, I loosened the gas cap and then the fuel drained out of the vent line and back into the tank. I then tightened the fuel cap and then fuel would eventually again start coming out of the vent line. The gas tank was about 3/4 full. The next question is, why is that happening? Is the fuel tank gettting pressurized somehow? Would it be the fuel pump is bad? How would that pressurize the inlet fuel line to the pump, wouldn't that keep fuel from even leaving the tank? Thanks again for any help guys...

I would say the vent line on the carb is stopped up.

Well I haven't gotten to it yet, is the carb vent line the one that routes between the gas tank & the air box, a yellow colored see thru hose? Has anyone else had any problems with fuel coming out of the gas tank vent hose?

My scram 00 did that before. It was starving for gas. It would only do it when I would be hard on it for a while like when you are running down a highway. Mt conclusion was that I was getting lower in gas and th gas was all shifting to the back of the tank. It will not do this with say over half tank or so. I checked vent lines and all but that was not my problem. But I'm not saying it's not your problem. It does sound like you are starving for gas. turn on the choke when it does this and see if it improves. It will only last a few sec. if it does improve it but if it does then you will know for sure you are starving for gas. Hope this helps. Make sure you do what ftwflh says and check the venting too. That can cause it to starve for gas also.

On the fuel out the vent issue. If it's hot and the engine is hot then it builds preasure. When you have a good bit of gas in the tank then sometimes it can slosh up in the vent hole and the preasure in the tank will push it on out the tube. Make sure the line is down in the steering shaft.
