I just read that the Artic Cats have a thermostat for water temperture control like a car.Does a SP have this also? If it does it must be the size of a quarter.I always thought the coolent was free flowing all the time.

I would assume so. The old 425 Magnum did. Never dug into a 500 motor yet to be sure.

Yes. It is the size of a nickel not a quarter.
It is on the left hand side of the cylinder head
in a small housing where the coolant hose connects. It looks just like a car setup, just really small. I got into it changing cams on my son's 425 EXP, putting a Scrambler 500 cam in. Since the cam, cylinder head are exactly the same as an SP, going by part numbers, and since I just put the H.O. cam in the 425 EXP,
we can safely assume the SP is the same set-up.
I can confirm this for you when I put the AAEN long duration cam in my H.O. And I can assure you of couple of posts when I do!!

Tim1,in the Polaris service manual. It gives the cooling system specifications. And since it does not give any year listing, it can be assume that the specifications are the same for the years 1996-2000.
Fan Switch (off)--165 degrees F
Fan Switch (on)---185 degrees F
Hot Light ON------221 degrees F
Thermosat ---starts opening at 176 F
Open 8mm @ 205 F this is full open
