Default sputtering in water 500 sp

i have a 99 sp 500, changed air filter and plug, ever since when i go thru water it spits and sputters it doesen't stall out but it barley gets me thru. the first time i noticed this i would go through fairly deep water it would sputter thru then 4-5 mins later it would clear up, last night i went thru some water it sputtered thru but cleared up as soon as i got out of it, but this water was not as deep as the first time. I checked the coil by spraying it with water and found no problems, i made sure the plug wire wasn't pulled out of the cap. so what else should i check.

thanks

Could be sucking steam into the intake which will make it sputter and bog down....

You could be getting a small amount of water in the plug wire cap where it connects to the spartk plug. Put some electrical grease in it to make a good seal and keep the water out. Hope this helps.

Mine does that too only when I power wash(06 scrammbler). Dealer told me it may be override electrics on handle bar. I havent tried getting in there yet to grease it but it is worth a shot to you. If the spark plug thing works, let me know because I havent tried that yet either.
