Default help please

i finally have the axle and houseing back together on the bench. well i have the 2 big nuts on the axle slightly tight and i can shift the houseing back and forth about a 1/4 inch. is this right because i do not want to do this again. i installed new races, bearings,o-rings, seals, and a new sprocket hub. it seems to me like the hubs are up against the snap rings on the axle, but i do not think there should be that much back and forth motion with the houseing or am i wrong. its a 99 scrambler 400.
