Sportsman Shifting Problem

I recently bought a 2004 Sportsman 400. It has 500 miles on it. I also own a 2006 500 EFI. When shifting from P to R or L/H it is very difficult, often requiring repeated hard yanks to get the shifter to move (yes I have the foot break engaged as required). This is nothing like my 500, which shifts smooth. I notice the machine idles very high, could this be a reason for the difficult shifting? I can easily move the shifter when the motor is off. Also, when idling, the 400 moves forward on its own unless I keep the break on, seems like another sign of too high an idle to me. Any advice?

Yes, I would agree idle is too high. At idle the front clutch should be seperated enough to let the "Pulley" spin without moving the belt. Back down the idle and both problems will most likely go away.

instigater is correct. sounds like your idle is way to high. should be around 1,000 + - rpms i know on both of my 06's i spray some wd-40 on the linkage ***** after i wash them from our rides (mudruns) just to keep them shifting smooth.

I have the same problem with my 2001 SP..I dropped the RPM but it didn't help.So it must be something in the trans.
I have no experince working on them so I guess I'll have to take it to a shop.I am on vaction this week and was hoping to do some driving..just bad timing..[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif[/img]

My ATV is like it's fully engaged and rolls ahead unless you use the brake then it will stall..and hard to shift too

if you turned your handle bars and the throttle reved up then i would say it needs to be adjusted. what is your rpm's. it should be around 1100.
