Wasup,
I bought an 06 Scrambler 500 H.O. Till Now, it's been a great addition. Last week the engine started Back firing once in a while. Now the engine will not run at Idle. It will stay running at Half or Three Quarter Throttle, and of course because of the high idle it's impossible to shift into gear. Any Ideas wat could be the cause??? Any "HELP" would be appreciated............

Clean or replace the air filter. (a lot of people forget to do this)

Check or replace the spark plug.

Check the ignition timing. (in case the screws that hold the plate in place came loose)

Check the valve timing. (in case the cam chain jumped a tooth on the sprocket, in which case the tensioner spring would need to be replaced)

Check to make sure none of the carburetor jets have come loose and are laying in the bottom of the float bowl.

Check to make sure the carburetor vacuum diaphragm doesn't have a hole or tear in it.

Not necessarily in that order.

Hope this helps.

Your ETC SWITCH electric throttle control switch is out of whack...

This is the black box above your thumb throttle. Open the box with a screwdriver, be very carefull there is a spring in there. To see if switch is bad put a piece of paper or cardboard between the contacts.

If the machine starts and idles your switch is bad.

You can either fix (adjust) the switch... or disable it.

You have no idea how common this problem is.

I'd second this one. If your quad runs smoothly at cruising speeds but not at idle, that tells me the jet that controls the idle circuit in the carburetor (the pilot jet in this case) has varnish in it which will restrict fuel at idle which causes a lean condition. Lean conditions will cause backfiring.

If this is the case, you will not notice backfiring at cruising speeds because the main jet takes over at cruising speeds.

Thanx Guys, I appreciate all the input and I will save All your ideas in an Offline file so if I need to review I can. I will sit down this week-end and try to find the problem. To answer the Question about the Dealer, Believe it or Not, the Place that Sold me the Machine said that was the LAST one they are selling. They are No Longer a Polaris Dealer. The Next Dealer would be like a 2 hr Drive away. Thats why I hope this is an ez fix so I won't have to Lug the Orange Beast up there............... Once again Thanx Guys.

When you take the tank off to get to the carb that is the time to check/readjust valves.
I do this EVERY time I have the gas tank off.
