Default Cracked FRAMES?

All -

I have post in another forum (Honda, please
don't shoot, lol.. I share this embassaring
problem here cause you all are REALLY REALLY
good with tech support and responsive. Early
observation is that Honda forum is no where
comparable to this one, with good people as you
all willing to help. Anyways I am in a pickle here
with just recently buying an old/used 1987 Honda
250 Fourtrax (What I get for buying non-Polaris,
okay go easy on me here, please) for my
nephews ealry christmas present for $900.00
as his starter bike, all local thru a friend of a friend
deal (Didn't go lookin, this one came to me, so
I entertain the idea, researched it abit etc. etc.)

Anyways see below the dotted line for my situation.
Bottom line is that I think I was scammed, I think the seller
knew darn well about this crack and we went all around
the quad for him explaining all the change outs, replacemenets
thru the years, suggestion, I asked point blank is there
anything in his opinion that needs attention or needs to
be done etc. etc.

HELP HELP what can I do? Will a wield fix work, should
I pursue confronting this guy, try to get my money back
or him make right this issue? What a mess, upset, disappointed
, thanks!

Problem:

Guess what? I went and bought this
quad, and about what I expected, certain
things missing from original stock condition.
Dings, little bent on ends of arms, scratched
and worn but no real rust, no cracks on the seat.

Everything pretty well functional, look like a good
buy. Then before offloading at my house still in
the truck (Off course after I bought it for $900.00
today)

BAAAMMMM, we (Dad and I) noticed a FRAME crack
directly above right front shock just pass the wield.
The crack goes all around the square tube portion
of the frame with slight (minute) rust. Knowing it
was not fresh, its not the paint. We put a razor blade in
the crack. Man, I am really upset, disappointed and feel
taken advantage of.

I need help here please what can I do? Is this something
I can fix? (I doubt it) anyone else doing their stuff
(riding and stunts) with known small cracks in the same
place? Whats the reliability? The point in buying this is
for my nephew as a starter quad BUT I do not WANT to
put him at risk of any danger.

Please help, all comments welcome.

P.S Yes, I know I bought this "AS IS" even with a Bill of
Sale (Personal sale between both of us) and I did inspect
all of the bike, he rode it, demo'ed it so to speak, I take blame
in not discovering it before the transaction but as he explain
all the parts replaced over the years, recommended future
things if needed, places to get cheap parts, it would appear
honesty was there (Maybe he didn't know, but doubtful since
the area he explained to me as upgrading the shocks is right
near the frame crack, etc.).

Original Post:

I have a friend that is willing to sell me
his 1987 Fourtrax. Here is the specs
with some throw ins and the asking price.
I need your help, is this a good deal? As I
am a Polaris owner not too up on the Honda's.
Some good points are that he is trustworthy and
honest in which is a BIG sell for me, but let me know
your opinions and what to look for in pursuing this
purchase. Thanks all opinions are WELCOME!

Regards,

Yea, kind of one of those things, I would have it welded, should be ok. Take it to a professional. Around here it is about $50/hr. That should take way less than a hour. If done right, it will probably be stronger than the original weld. Good luck!

Okay so from the sounds of things here
its not TOO big of a deal? A little bummed man,
almost $1000.00 then having to tote around
town for a welder to spend more bucks/time
and aggreviation.

No one has mentioned making this guy eat
the costs or take it back or something? I
guess reading between the lines, if I can't
fix this thing than I am screw'd.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions!

Good night, take care..:-(

They seem to break the stock frames I mean I put a 250r four trax for a friend an it had weld allover the frame. I would take all the plastic off an check the frame an check to see if there an any more so can get them all fixed at once. Im guess the on you got is the 4 stroke 250. I wouldn't be to upset it dosen't sound like to bad a price.

i agree with everyone else, take the plastics off the frame and check the whole thing over, see if there are any more breaks in the frame, then take it up to a welder in town and have him gusset it and weld it all back up. if you can get him to gusset it, or buy a gusset kit and have the welder install it, your frame shoudl end up quite a bit stronger than a stock one. hit all the new welds and exposed bare metal with some rustoleum paint (hammerd would probebly match stock paint) so they dont rust. and you should be good as new

All thanks for the responsiveness to this thread
and your suggestions and willingness to help.

I know have the Pics up on WebShots. Please
view slide show, the clearest pictures for viewing
the cracked frame is pics (3,4,10,12,15).
Other pics were for my purposes of demonstrating
back to the seller that it is indeed his bike (aka stickers
on fender/body).

I would not worry about it too much. Take it to a good welder. He can fix it. I took my mailbox post I fabbed up, He welded the top and some brackets. Cost me $20.00. A good welder can fix that...

I wouldnt bother with the seller. By the time you argue with him on it it wouldnt be worth your time. Plus all the rides I have sold are clearly stated in the bill of sale, as is.

I got a car for my wife. 1998 Stratus. Head gasket started leaking 3000 miles after I got it.. Thats a $900.00 bill. Cant do anything about it. Im SOL..

You will be ok.. Just do the research on the welder and ask if he has fixed cracked frames and get a few quotes. You may be able to get by cheaper and go there in person with the quad, ask him what he would charge for "cash out the door" he may do it cheaper. Thats how I got my mailbox post welded so cheap. It wasnt worth my time messing with.

RESIST Viper, relax and resist..

RESIST..........
RESIST........ NAH cant resist.....

You may want to buy a Eiger. I heard the frames on those can hit a brick wall at 105mph after going thru a raging river and up a vertical bank and still come out of it without scratching the paint. Of course the cheap Polaris frames made from tin cant wistand anything

Instigater. So speaking of belt smoking, whats the verdict on him? Is he gone? Anyone heard?

Do you have any Grandsons in High School? They can take it in to school shop class and weld it> Teachers love this stuff and usually are excellant welders. Any good weld will do the steel in these machines are exceptionly strong.
