Default What a mess!

Hey guys, merry christmas. As I was sitting in my house relaxing, I got the brilliant idea to go out in my garage and begin changing the front springs on my 500 sportsman HO. Everything was going great until yup you guessed it, the axle shaft came out of the hub assembly. I will be darned if I could get it back in. So low and behold, I removed the hub and removed the boot clamps and it was then that I realized there was no way I would have ever gotten them back together without removing the hub and boot. Oh well, live and learn. At least now I know what makes this front end tick and I also know that everything is in really good shape as I cleaned and inspected all the parts.

Couple questions: The boots are in good shape as the machine only has 700 miles on it so with that being said can I purchase the clamp tool and clamps from a local auto parts store? Next question, can I use a good automotive grease or do I need to puchase the special Polaris grease? Next question Should I replace the o ring on the hub cover or can I just use it over again? Last question do I need to purchase the oil for inside the hub from polaris or is it simply just regular oil?

Hey guys I appreciate the input as I have learned a great deal from reading this forum so THANKS.

By the way, I am replacing the original springs with EPI heavy duty because I did not like the way the front end sagged with and without my plow.

Thanks for your replies, Superintendent

clamp tool and clamps can be found at your local auto parts store. the clamps may be difficult to find. you dont need to use the polaris grease. if the o ring looks good u can reuse it or just get a new one cuz they are cheap. ive always bought the polaris hub oil. i think ams oil has some stuff you can use also.

Scrammersam, thanks for the response, you are right so far I have tried three different auto parts stores and they do not have the clamps. I will be making a stop at the local Polaris dealership this afternoon.

Thanks again for your help, I will let you guys know how I made out..

If you didn't damage the clamp you can reuse them.If damaged any autotive shop should have clamps. For the grease you must use a CV grease. it is much stickier. It is made not to sling out when spinning. As for the hub oil, I would use nothing but the polaris reccomended oil. All the rest have good alternatives but not the hub oil.
