Engine compression and how to fix
#2
YOU NEED A COMPRESION GAUGE TO DO THIS. YOU CAN PURCHASE ONE AT ANY PARTS STORE. FIRST YOU TAKE OUT THE SPARKPLUG THEN YOU SCREW IN THE COMPRESION GAUGE. MAKING SURE THE GUAGE NEEDLE IS ON ZERO OR AT THE BOTTOM YOU THEN PULL THE PULL ROPE SEVERAL TIMES UNTIL THE NEEDLE ON THE GAUGE STOPS CLIMBING, THEN REED THE NUMBERS WHERE THE NEEDLE STOPPED. ANY THING OVER 100 LBS IS CONSIDERED GOOD COMPRESION. THE HIGHER THE COMPRESION THE MORE POWER THE ENGINE HAS. ON POLARIS ENGINES USE THE PULL ROPE TO CHECK THE COMPRESION FOR THE SIMPLE REASON THERE IS A DECOMPRESION LEVER ON THE CAMSHAFT AND IT WILL NOT READ CORRECTLY IF YOU USE THE STARTER.

if your compresion is below 100 lb it is time to rebuild the top end. to do this you need to do a valve job, bore the cylinder and replace the piston, rings piston pin and circlips(round clips that hold the piston pin in place on the piston)reseat the valves and change the valve seals.while i was doing this i would replace the timing chain as well.also check for worn cam lobes and damage to the rocker arms.if you dont change your oil and filter regularly it will cause the cam lobes and rocker arms to wear.the reason is the oil will breakdown and form small particles that stop up the oil filter and the oil system does not lube properly.i also would recomend using pennzoil 10w30 or 5w30 platnum synthetic oil.it is what i use and works great.you can pickup a phram oil filter for your atv at walmart.it is listed in the book under motorcycles. my cell is 337-515-4534 if you need to talk to me.
