If you are buying new, your price range will pretty much eliminate getting four wheel drive. If you want four wheel you're going to have to buy used. A good entry level choice would be a Hawkeye 2x4, MSRP is about $3900. You could also go with a Trail Boss 330 for about the same price. It's a little sportier looking and still has racks.

The TB's are great and have been virtually unchanged for a while now. If it isn't broke, don't fix it right? I have heard some woes about the Hawkeye's as well, and with a few more CC's for the same price, I would go with the TB. I've owned an 87, and two 95 TB's and all have been great. The only problem I had with my first 95 TB was that someone totaled it for me. The current one I own is a 250 and is faster than my 06 Suzuki Ozark 250, and it has no mods or rebuilds. Good luck!

The 330 TB is a great machine for a beginer or anyone who wants a full size quad that doesnt cost an arm and leg.The only thing it needs is a couple clutch springs changed and it will run with anything.
The Hawkeye seems little and cheap to me.
