Sportsman 500 kicking into AWD!! HELP!!
#1
It is very cold out and I have been playing out in the snow. When I am goofing around in 2 wheel drive I notice my machine is kicking into 4 wheel drive suddenly. Does anyone know why this is happening? Is it the cold or something else.

From what I understand it is an inherent problem in the new design front differentials. My 04 500 doesn't do it becuase of the older style external hubs. My friends 04.5 with the new differential does it when spinning fast (like on snow). I have friends with newer 500's, 600's 700's and 800's which all do it when the throttle is pegged and the rear wheels are spinning like crazy. The bad thing is that if spinning too fast when it engages it can blow up your front differential.
Bottom line is don't spin your back wheels... If you're not driving it like a mad man you won't see a problem.

Well here goes another one! You can read all kinds of problems with the front diffs on the newer quads. I am on my 3rd front diff in 2300 miles for the same problem. This is the weak link of Polaris Sportsmans. Polaris knows of the issue but there is no fix to upgrade the weak parts in the front diff. This is a poor design. I know guys with Sportsmans that leave it in awd all the time and have not had as many problems but the ones that like to fool around in 2wd have problems.
