Default To prime or not to prime. That is the question?

I was going to do my first oil change on my Sportsman 500 this weekend, and I had a few questions. I stopped by yesterday and purchased the oil change kit from my dealer and I was looking over the instructions and it stated that the oil pump must be primed if the oil hose between the tank and pump has been disconnected. Is this mandatory to disconnect the oil hose? Also would any of you suggest draining the crankcase? A friend of mine said that it was a total waste of time. It was hard to get to and hardly and oil came out once he drained his. Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I always prime the system even if I don't have the oil line off. Why take the chance?

I drained the crankcase also....More came out than I though also!!!!
The Polaris oil change kit I bought came with three bottles of oil ..I only needed two.........Also have two NEW washers/gaskets in there .......one for the plastic oil tank and the other for the cranckcase plug!!!
Hope that helps.....Caper........
