Hey, I am new here, and I need your help. I have a 1999 Scrambler 500. It has been a great quad, however all of a sudden it has multiple problems or multiple symptoms of a problem. First of all, the neutral light only comes on when it is in reverse. Second, the reverse light only comes on when the reverse/override button is pressed. Third, the four wheel drive does not work in reverse, under any conditions. Fourth, you do not have to push the reverse/override button, it always goes just as fast backwards as it does forwards. It seems to me that all of these symptoms must be connected, and I expect once I pinpoint what is the main cause of these symptoms, everything will probably work properly.
It seems like something is telling the brain that the tranny is in neutral when it is not, therefore it does not allow four wheel drive to engage as it is not needed in neutral. I am still lost as to why the reverse rev limiter is not retarding the engine, unless the brain thinks it is not in reverse. I do not have a clue how to make the system recognise what gear it is actually in. Is there any adjustment in the neutral/reverse switch located on the tranny?
For what it is worth, just prior to this condition, I removed the tranny and had my mechanic ( not a jackleg mechanic ) open it up and go through everything, trying to find a problem I was having. The tranny specked the same as new, everything was perfect inside and out. The tranny was put back together and re-installed into the quad. It shifts perfect and is smooth as ever. ( the problem I was looking for was a couple rollers missing in the drive chain ). New chain and sprockets fixed it right up. But this situation I am having has my mechanic as well as myself baffled. I brought it back home to do some research in the repair manuel, however the manuel I have lists three different trannies, and neither are exactly the one I have.
Any chance one of you here in the forums has experienced my situation? Please lend me your expertise!

Thank you. Since you have the part number, is there any chance you know how much this part may cost? Also, I have a 2005 Scrambler 5004X4 that I can take parts from to test mine. Any chance you might be able to describe what the part looks like or where it is situated behind the hood so that I know which part to swap?

i just broke open a 2000 trailblazer i know they are not the same but is there a plug on the tranny. on the tb the light came on but no reverse come to find out the c clip spread and let a gear move to much out of adjustment. maybe the electical plug on the tranny that lets it know when to put on the ligt is out of adjustment when they put it back together. good luck.

I'm not sure if this will be helpful or not. I had a 2002 250cc Xplorer 4x4 that had some of your symptoms. It turned out to be a stator that needed to be replaced. Might ask your mechanic about if the 99 Scrambler even has one or not. I had about 1/2 the troubles you did and replacing the stator solved every problem I had.

I checked the plug on the tranny, and it was plugged in well and showed no signs of damage. I did not notice any adjustment on it but will loosen the torx screws and see if it has any adjustment there. Thank you.
